I have owned more tubas than I can remember, with only one of them being a new purchase. The moment you open the new instrument's case, it becomes a used instrument (okay -- maybe after an hour of playing it). New instruments are nice, but $1,000 will buy several college books (though not as many as it USED to buy -- hint -- use Amazon!). As this may not be your LAST euph purchase, save the $$$.
My $0.02,
Cheers!

Is there more or less secretly a reference to a pattern (told about here on TN) that certain F tubas with limited lower ranges were sold down a line of less and less experienced students?bloke wrote:We're stuck on "Besson Prestige"?
Wrap the money up in some asbestos, so it doesn't burn a hole in your pocket.
Once the teacher frees themselves of the Besson, with what are they hoping to replace it?

This seems like a fair observation. How about OP? What's your teacher buying? Or does he just have a surplus...bloke wrote:No, Klaus. I'm just pointing out that there are an awful lot of great models of euphoniums out there (and some that I've seen offered "used" for something lower than six large), and also, "What's the big hurry?" Also, if someone (who obviously knows more that the o.p., as the o.p. poster routinely pays that person for advice) is wanting to sell a particular make/model of instrument, what make/model are they planning to buy to replace it?

In response to a similar query in an identically titled thread on Dave Werden's board, the OP stated that:Karl H. wrote:This seems like a fair observation. How about OP? What's your teacher buying? The asking price does appear to be toward the high end of the used Prestige price range, which might cause one to wonder whether the teacher's primary motive is to facilitate the sale of the horn by a former student and facilitate the purchase of said horn by a current student or to flip the horn for a profit. She is selling it because she is a Tuba player, and she bought the horn from a former student who switched over to a Wilson. She (from what I understood) bought the horn so another student of hers or I could purchase it.
While there is certainly nothing improper about a teacher assisting a former student with the sale of an instrument or assisting a current student with the purchase of an instrument, and while I would not necessarily consider it improper for a teacher to receive a token "broker's commission" for facilitating the sale and purchase, I would question the propriety of flipping a horn to a current student if the difference between the amount the teacher paid for the horn and the amount at which the teacher proposes to sell the horn is non-trivial.

I know you most wont care, but I went with the Used horn. I was able to get the price down a bit, here is a picture of it, It is quite amazing.
It came with a Gold Plated SM3U that grows on me every time I play on it.
