Probably the worst day ever. The audition I had been waiting for the last 25 years happened this morning at 10am. I learned about it 14 hours earlier from a facebook post from a friend of a friend. I pestered a teaching colleague who plays in that orchestra relentlessly for the last two months about when the audition would be posted...they wouldn't give her any answer.

I was still going to go and take the audition this morning but decided my VW 1st movement was just too rough and there were three students depending on me for recital hour today.

Moral of the story...keep your chops in shape and your excerpts/standard solos in top form. You never know when you might need them with little or no prep time.

I'm not bitter, just extremely disappointed in myself.

Sad day. Having a hard time coping with the news that one of my 20 yr clients murdered his wife and burned the house down around her. She was such a sweet lady. I always worried he might not be quite right. Since it was arson the kids now have no house, no mom and no dad. :( :( :(

UPDATE:

Today was one of those days that made me want to take everything involving the tuba, lock it in some forgotten attic in a lonely coner of my mind, and enter some crappy corporate career field -- like trying to manage a WalMart.

It seems that, with time, I'm getting progressively worse.
I had aspirations once, you know.
Oh well, it's not like I have to 'make fast notes and have a world class sound' to teach kids how to fart around on the tuba.

...but I'm a pessimist by nature.

Guess I just gotta practice more.

When I have days like that, it seems like the next day is an awesome one. Kind of like the day *after* a hurricane is really really nice weather.

Bailed out my pickup from the repair shop - front end, both left and right hubs, bearings and ball joints. Just when I had the credit card about paid off. This too shall pass.

Snow days were way cooler when staying home from school didn't mean shoveling the walk and digging out the car.

They were also much cooler before I started working remotely for a company in Florida. Though, I guess if they have a hurricane (which I hope they don't) or something, I can sign off early...?

I'm off to a concerto competition concert with my orchestra tonight. Included is an 11 year old violinist, Maya Johnson, playing the absolute $#!+ out of the Sarasate Carmen on her 3/4 violin. There will be some jaws dropping in the audience tonight! The best part is I only have to play the first 8 bars and the last 7 notes. In between I get to be amazed by Maya.

I found out today that I never filed my 2009 state taxes. I thought I did. I thought I paid (I didn't owe that much). When I got the letter on Saturday, I was outraged. Good thing the offices where closed on Saturday because I would have embarrassed myself big time. Seems that while doing my taxes online, I got all the way to the end, made a copy, saved the copy as a file on my computer, and never pushed the complete button. It's been a while since I felt that stupid.

I have been updated by the state of Ohio.

What's up with this message?

ADVERSE WEATHER UPDATE - YOUR SHIPMENT MAY BE DELAYED

I shipped a BD present via UPS last Wed and as of today I still see this message on the tracking website and it shows it still to be in Atlanta. It's going to East Texas. Anybody know about any adverse weather down there?

That's what I thought. The Interstates have been clear between here and there for several days. My package is still sitting on a truck in a parking lot in Atlanta. UPS finally got back to me late this afternoon with a most unusual explanation. The farm to market roads and city streets in East Texas still had problems yesterday. The big trucks can move ok, but the warehouse workers can't get to work so they have no one to unload the trucks. Once loaded the trucks can only make partial deliveries to the more traveled streets. Therefore there is this huge backup of Westbound freight all the way to the East coast. I know this was a freak storm but how do you run a railroad like that?
