Some great old jazz with tuba (1959)

This is Nat Adderley's jazz sextet from the CD "Much Brass"...recorded in 1959. I like these recordings in particular because the tuba isnt given the bassline, but rather plays licks with the cornet and trombone..and even solos sometimes. The tubist is Laymon Jackson who is actually a jazz bassist. PUT TUBAS AND SOUSAPHONES BACK IN JAZZ!! Enjoy

Dear John,
Thanks! Laymon Jackson was a great bassist, he really laid it down. (Stylistically he was not far from Sam Jones, who plays bass on the Adderly album ). I got to hear him dozens of times, and he was a big influence on my playing.
He was a first call player in Atlanta from the 60's through the 80's. But I never knew he played tuba until after his death, about 20 years ago. Now I know the album title, next stop, Amazon.

Yes, Jackson was a great jazz tubist also. Here is something I found about this album in particular. "One of Nat Adderley's finest albums. Sometimes the inclusion of tuba in a small-group modern jazz setting can produce whale-like results among a school of dolphin, but that's not the case here. Tuba man Laymon Jackson doesn't dominate or weigh down the proceedings, but merely gives them another texture. " Which is true. I like that he doesn't play the bass line but fits in with the other brass sound. Excellent stuff.
