William Bell, in the American premiere with the Little Orchestra, New York, 1954. There is a CD available with information on this forum; do a search.

I think the most striking thing is how SIMILAR they are. The primary differences are mostly in terms of style and shape of line. Not the sort of thing that is going to show up when doing the proposed notation experiment.
I agree notice of similarity, when I hear someone's performance of the VW the first thing that strikes me is their musicianship, the version they play is very secondary.

To your list if recordings add:
Peter Wilsh-Wilson and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and
whoever is playing with the Singapore Orchestra's release of Tuba Concerti
City Intonation Inspector - Dallas Texas
"Holding the Bordognian Fabric of the Universe together through better pitch, one note at a time."

Practicing results in increased atmospheric CO2 thus causing global warming.

It is interesting to note that this article:

http://www.berliozhistoricalbrass.org/35-2_Wint08.pdf

states that Roy Douglas, who wrote out the full score of the concerto for the first performance, edited the Eulenberg Edition miniature score. Unless we find RVW's handwritten version, this might be as close to the intended composition as we can get. I'm buying the Eulenberg Edition score now.
The old rental score was manuscript, and far to messy to have been done by any professional copyist. I copied the part that I have from that score.
I'm sorry you misunderstood, my reference was not directed toward the version you are playing.

In searching for a version of the solo close to what RVW may have intended the referenced article should not be discounted. Clifford Bevan (a co-author) is quite respected and quotes Roy Douglas directly saying he had to copy the score with a short deadline.

The article does not state that this score is the rental score. I think it will be interesting to see what changes Douglas may be in the Eulenberg score. He was an associate of RVW during the period of the concerto. A good source.

The short deadline issue continues today for many premieres. I can't tell you how many times I get a new chart either in hard copy or via file and someone needs it yesterday which I am sure leads to some sort of error form my end. I do my best, but something gets left out, missed, etc. Sometimes things are just not communicated clearly...I am sure there are some stories about this surrounding the VW as well.

We have a winner! Roy Douglas is the author/orchestrator/copyist. Here's some more from him:

"From 1944 until the death of Ralph Vaughan Williams in 1958," he writes, "I had the unforgettable experience of being his friend and musical assistant, helping him to prepare works for performance and publication, including his last four symphonies and the opera Pilgrim’s Progress. As Roy makes clear in his book Working with Vaughan Williams (British Library Publishing: 1988), the composer’s manuscripts were very difficult to read. A large part of his job was to provide accurate and legible copies, and to correct the numerous mistakes in the original scores. He also had to deal with the many changes made in rehearsal, and to correct proofs.

Vaughan Williams described this process as "washing the face" of his music, while Roy saw himself as a "musical midhusband" to the composer’s new-born works. For 30 years, from 1942 to 1972, he performed a similar service for William Walton, whose scores were not quite so difficult to read. But he, too, would frequently change his mind, often at the very last minute.

Only one Ab suites my ears, and it was pencilled into the very first copy of the RVW I ever saw in the Oberlin music library. That particular part had MANY markings on it, but I don't believe they were all derived from the original manuscript. I would be curious to know who penned the markings in that part, they are insightful and interesting. That part does not contain the additional 2nd cadenza "bits" that I very much enjoy, and (personally) first noticed in the Singapore CD.

The work is not my favorite concerto for tuba... but that is a different topic.

Haven't you seen the post I did several years ago?

I took my Eulenburg score many years ago and added the markings from my copy of the rental score. The editing of the tuba part in the Eulenburg part is nearly Identical to the year after year OUP edition, and has little similarity to the rental score manuscript. In fact the Eulenburg score states it's "published by arrangement with Oxford University Press".
The Eulenburg Edition has two components to the edition. A Preface that is copyright 1982 with Eulenburg, and the music that is still copyright OUP 1979. The Preface consists of notes on the concerto by Michael Kennedy in 1981, also translated into German, and a performance note of the 1st movement cadenza stating it is from the original manuscript and the view of Philip Catelinet and Roy Douglas that RVW would have preferred this version.
The only problem is the Eulenburg edition included is very different from the rental score manuscript and seemingly identical to what OUP Press has always printed. The rental manuscript has different phrasing in the cadenza as well one Ab. The Eulenburg has the OUP two Ab and OUP phrasing. I use my copy of the manuscript rental score as my guide to the piece.
Whether the "original manuscript" score that is referred to is the same as the rental part manuscript score, I don't know, but if Douglass did the editions for the Eulenburg score, they're the same as OUP.
