I have an upcoming opportunity to attend a Master Class. Although I have played for a long time, I have never attended a master class. Not wanting to embarrass myself or the sponsor, I am seeking insight on proper protocol from veterans of master classes. This event will be held on a university campus lasting 90 minutes and is billed as a recital and master class. So, do you bring your horn? What is the dress code? Are these mainly for music majors or can/do amateurs and hobbyists attend? Do you ask questions or just listed and learn? What is a typical format of the class?
Any insight would be appreciated.

Re: Master Class Insight
I've been to a few and they've all been different. Dress well! Call the school and ask about the bringing the horn. Some classes have active (playing) and passive (non-playing) participants. If you're not sure what to do, dressing well and being quiet always works for the first one. You might also ask the school if it's okay to record any part of the class and do so. Always nice to be able to hear it again. And of course, enjoy it!
Peace.

Re: Master Class Insight
I have both hosted and given many masterclasses. In this day & age, anything goes. Bring your horn & something prepared to play. Dress nicely (slacks and dress shirt, polish your shoes) but don't go for the suit & tie; it's not really necessary, be comfortable. If you are going to get a mini lesson from the guest artist(s), don't be shy when the group is being asked for volunteers. There is room for players of all ability levels at these things. Best words of advice: Keep your ears & mind open, and volunteer. Have fun!

Re: Master Class Insight
As suggested, I checked with the University. They said a small group of students has been selected for coaching and the room is not configured for others to bring their instruments. Now I know to dress nice and be prepared to listen and soak up as much guidance as I can. I plan to have a great time.

Re: Master Class Insight
Hi Brian,
From your location and description, I am guessing you might be headed to Oystein Baadsvik's masterclass the beginning of March at either UMN or St. Olaf?
If so (or even if not), bring your mouthpiece along. Many clinicians use buzzing and all attendees usually can participate in this type of exercise. Take and use what you can and file the rest of the info away for future use.
Good luck soaking,

Yes, it is Oystein Baadsvik at the U of MN. Thank you for the mouth piece suggestion. According to Mr. Baadsvik's website, he is traveling with Cantus in early March. Cantus is an very good men's singing group. Doesn't seem to fit, but who knows. The Cantus website doesn't show him with them or much going on during the March 1-5 time frame. No mater what, this should be entertaining. Oystein is a showman.

This can be very confusing because this Cantus group is actually from Norway:opus37 wrote:Yes, it is Oystein Baadsvik at the U of MN. Thank you for the mouth piece suggestion. If you have time on March 2, you can catch his mini-recital and masterclass at UMN from 3:30-5:00 and then head here for another concert at 7pm here:
Wednesday March 2nd, 7.30pm
Central Lutheran Church, 333 Twelfth street, Minneapolis.
I believe it is about a mile from the school. Admission is free, but there is a parking charge that I believe is about $10.00.
Oystein's recital will be:
Ordner Seg (It'll Be Alright from his "Ferry Tales" CD and now available as sheet music here - http://www.baadsvik.com/index.php?optio ... e&Itemid=1)
Three Piazzolla Tangos
Czardas
Maybe a Fnugg in there somewhere as well...
He will be at St. Olaf for another mini-recital and masterclass on March 5 and that event starts at 4pm. More information can be obtained by contacting Paul Niemisto:

If anyone has questions, you can always shoot me an email as well. Too bad I am not in MN to catch these events...
And before MN, there is a brass event in New Hampshire in case anyones might be interested. It is the weekend of February 26-27 and the artists include: Terry Everson, Joe Alessi, Phil Myers, Adam Frey and Osytein Baadsvik. More info here:

I hope to see some of you there...

Central Lutheran Church, 333 Twelfth street, Minneapolis.
Thursday March 3rd, 7.00pm
Oak Hill Lutheran Church, 8901 France Avenue, South Bloomington, MN 55317

Norway Hall, 21A, North Lake Avenue, Duluth, Minnesota
Sunday March 6th
1.00pm: Den Norske Mindekirke
7.00pm: St. Olaf College, Boe Memorial Church
There is a master class at the U of MN on March 2nd and a second at St. Olaf on March 5th with Oystein Baadsvik.
