What hobbies do you enjoy?

Post by Tubajug »

Hey TubeNetters,

I'm interested to know what you enjoy doing outide music/tuba time. I'm a WWII aviation buff who enjoys building plastic models. I also recently gave Bob Ross-style painting a try and quite enjoy it. What do you all enjoy?

Here's a diorama I made featuring a (fictional) crash landed Spitfire during the Battle of Britain.

Another view.

My most recent "Bob Ross" painting.

What do you like to do? Thanks for sharing!

Both of you might enjoy visiting this museum if you have reason to be in the Seattle area:

http://www.flyingheritage.com/" target="_blank

This is Paul Allen's fighter plane collection. They are actively being restored and maintained and, at various times of the year, 'fly days' are scheduled and the planes are flown for maintenance purposes and for the people to see. (It is not a scheduled air show.)

If you can't visit in person, perhaps the website could provide subject matter for your own creations.

One of my other hobbies is ham radio and I also do a fair amount of radio listening. I've always found it fascinating to hear broadcasts from all over the US with a simple table radio. I picked that one up when I had to spend three months in bed with a kidney diesease when I was 7 and my father put the family radio in my bedroom. Since I wasn't going to school, it didn't matter that I stayed up all night listening to the far away stations.

I love Shep Paine! I actually bought his book "How to Build Dioramas" after reading the pamphlet that came in my dad's Monogram B-17 model from the 1970s. The P-47 Thunderbolt is my favorite plane. I would love to own one, but being a musician will probably never come up with the $2 million it takes just to buy one, let alone maintain it. They do make plans for 1/2 size WWII planes you can build and fly yourself:

Well, tuba is by far the biggest... Other things:

• Making cheese
• Drinking beer (yeah yeah... I mean as an educational thing, the way people learn about foods. One day when I have the space, I will be a home brewer.)
• Hiking
• If hiking is not possible, walking. Wife and I did a 14 mile trek on Saturday.

Hobbies include riding my motorcycle every chance I get, and if I am not able to ride, home improvement projects, especially my deck.

While other hobbies have come and gone, tuba playing and music has been my one continuing interest through life.

In my younger years steam locomotives and model railways (railroads) were my main interest - I once had huge layout filling whole room. But with the end of real working steam around the world and the passing-away of my father with who I shared the hobby, my interest has waned with the model railway long since being dismantled - the room is now my music room.

Outside tuba playing I currently enjoy as hobbies cycling and wildlife photography. I have made several safari's to Africa, and have photographed tigers in India.

I've had several serious hobbies over the years.

When I was a kid, my favorite pastime was building model ships and aircraft. In my teens is just keeping my 'beater' cars going. After a hitch in The Navy... my attention turned to classic automobiles and street racers. A divorce 15 years ago killed that hobby and eradicated a nice collection including a '76 Corvette, '55 Chevy Nomad, '69 and '71 cowl-induction AMX Javelins, and a '60 Ford retractable hardtop. The divorce would have been worth it at three times the cost!

Now... my hobby is the best I could have ever hoped for.... fooling around with music and tubas. How else could I have ever justified owning these beauties?....

Woodworking, specifically restoring old/antique furniture. My current project is cutting down an oak postal sorting table found in my Father-in law's barn. When they closed the two man local post office, he retired and brought his personal table home, stored it in the barn, and there it had remained until we sold the place last year. I barely rescued enough of it from the termites to make a side table for my wife's recliner. This is almost as therapuedic as my music.
I am fortunate to have a great job that feeds my family well, but music feeds my soul.

Oh, and also travel. It's expensive, so I don't get to do it as much as I'd like...but do what I can. I don't like to stay still for long, and there are few places in the world that I wouldn't want to visit at least once.

Also, I think it's absolutely necessary for me to travel to all 50 states. I'm up to 34... still need to hit the Pacific NW, the upper plains, deep south, Alaska, and Hawaii.

Like the Elephant, I'm an avid reader. I've got about the next dozen books I plan to read all lined up, and am seriously considering getting a Kindle to make it a little easier. I've also been doing sleight-of-hand magic off and on for 10 or 11 years now. My favorite is doing card tricks, and I have several books and DVDs on magic. It's fun, but very time consuming, so I don't do as much as I would like.

More recently, my girlfriend and I have gotten into playing board games. There are tons of terrific board games out there, that can be very in-depth and complex. It's a lot of fun, and a great way to spend time together. Some of the games can get pretty expensive; I'm probably got about $200 into our favorite game, between the game itself and all the expansions. It's a lot of money, but we've gotten way more than $200 worth of entertainment out of it, so I think it was worth it (and certainly way cheaper than tubas!).

Come the spring, I plan to start running, as part of my efforts to lose weight and get in shape. Maybe that will become my next hobby.

MOTORCYCLES! Camping, motorcycle camping (SLIGHTLY different), dogs. Used to be into model trains (G scale), but it was a huge money pit. I like to be involved in encouraging composers to write for brass chamber music. And I read an eclectic range of books from Sci Fi to the lost books of the bible.

I love golf, road cycling and reading, and I am a Scotch Whisky enthusiast. Lately, though, this has become my most time consuming hobby:

About 10 years ago they were here.
About the same time ago I saw it at Sanderson Field in Shelton, WA. Pretty impressive. I beleive it was a 1946 model so escaped the fate of so many more.

When I was a younger man, I drank, smoked, and chased wild women-- Not too long ago I was forced to give it all up though-- It was the worst 10 minutes of my life

Seriously -- I like to motorcycle and fix up (and or restore) old tractors and pickups-- Right now my projects are: 1( 1940 chevy pickup 2( 1967 gmc pickup 3( 1937 International cabover D-300 4(1930 chevy rumble seat coup 5( 1943 Minniapolis Moline ZTS tractor 6( 1965 John Deere 1010 tractor 7( 1966 GTO hdtp 8( 1953 chevy pickup 9( 1945 IHC T-6 crawler and some other stuff ( you get the picture ) And now I've started gathering up Tubas !!! I asked my doctor and she said they don't have any pills yet to help with what I have --

I hate needles.
I'm diabetic so I play with needles on a regular basis

My favorite hoppy right now is a wonderful game called "annoy the wife" Our current game consists of me knockin on the UND Fighting Sioux (her alma mater) as I've applied for admission to one of the rivals at NDSU. GO BISON!
