How do these play? Even though I would prefer it in F (usable low C and B) I very strongly considered the smaller one I saw for $500 a few months back as a flugelhorn thing for big band (bass trombone chair), jazz, some quintet, further annoying my neighbors,...
Thanks!

I have no idea about those horns so I think you should; buy it, play it, and write a review!

Re: Kanstul G bariphoniums
I marched a summer with these horns. The best G bugles IMHO. The reason? These horns have two main tuning slides, and one of them has a thumb ring on it for tuning on the fly. Anyone who has played G bugles will tell you a big problem is pitch and the Kanstul is the only one with a setup to help with pitch. Go for it.Bob Kolada wrote:How do these play? Re: Kanstul G bariphoniums
All G bugles since 1930 have been built out of the major components of standard band instruments. They are essentially Bb instruments that have been permanently and irreversibly crooked in G.
There would be no advantage to using them, the temperaments and tendencies of two different keys open up a big can of worms.

Re: Kanstul G bariphoniums
One of the members in our quintet plays a G Bugle. He plays the trombone or sometimes the french horn part. He has to continually transpose the music. (Sybilius is his close personal friend.) He runs into range problems with either part, but finds a way to make it work. The sound is good, but very directional. An upright horn sound better in the church.

I caught a dose of Sybilius back in school, but a round of antibiotics knocked it right out.
