4AM Vs. SM4M

Do you mean 4AL? I believe the 4AL is a trombone mouthpiece, it is also what Steven Mead played on before he designed the Dennis Wick SM series euphonium mouthpieces. Given that euphonium and trombone are quite different, although they have similar tonal range, I imagine the design concept and obviously the sound concept are very different. So why not try a SM4 for your euphonium? On the other hand, if the 4AM is already working well for you, it's not neccessary to change, either.

But 4AM could be a great time to play. If you have grouchy neighbors, you could give them a nasty wake-up call. Great idea...except for the part about getting on COPS.

The 4AM is the same as the 4AL but in medium shank (I think). Actually, the 4AM and SM4M are pretty similar in broad terms. There are changes in the outside of the MP, and I think the rim is a little different too and I'm sure some other stuff, but when you're comparing all types of mouthpieces, the Steven Mead series and the Dennis Wick Trombone series are pretty close.

I say give the SM4M a shot, especially if you like the trombone counterpart (4AM). I personally don't like the Steven Mead or Wick mouthpieces, but that's just my preference and I know a lot of people love them.
