I can't imagine they are from the factory, but they seem to have been added long ago. Maybe by the original owner when it was new

Chances are they were added to reinforce a very badly damaged, easily warped bell.

Might've been an Italian opera horn, where disgruntled patrons pelted the pit with large vegetables when they didn't feel they were getting their money's worth...
Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?
