I HATE MUTES! The small aluminum Humes & Berg SHOULD work just fine. See if anyone has one you can try....

Re: Miraphone 1281 mute options
Thanks for the advice
I've got a Humes & Berg Symphonic mute. Is there a smaller one than that? I am going to try replacing the cork with something thinner, but I'm not sure it will solve the extra 6"+ sticking out of the top.
All I know is this HB mute is useless in my Nirschl.
I've also got a Balu mute and a Nate Griffith Mute.

Re: Miraphone 1281 mute options
I've tried my Denis Wick mute and I wouldn't say it was a great "fit", but it did (in my opinion) create a nice muted color to the sound.
That being said, there is a whole lot of mute hanging out of the end of the bell! Not so much the "body" of the mute, but the "cup" is just very large compared to the horn. It also throws off the balance of holding the horn. Given the size of most mutes out there, I'd also be curious to see if there was a smaller mute that fit the 1281. I'll test it again and report back with how much of the mute is hanging out.

My Humes fits fine my 1281. I haven't really noticed any problems with it though, I haven't been required to use it very much. The only reason I have the F mute was from a package deal a few years ago.
