Any fear or worry I have isn't for me, it's for the tens (hundreds?) of thousands of people in Japan. I know what we're seeing is only a tiny, tiny representation of reality. I feel guilty that I can "turn it off" by changing the channel, closing the computer, etc.

Well, "guilt" might be the wrong word. I know I was not the cause of any of this, that is ridiculous. More of a helpless feeling, and shock of watching perhaps the most video-recorded disaster of all time.

My guess has always been that most people don't buy guns for the "practical purpose" of protection. More like recreation (skeet, hunting, firing range)... but I'm not from Texas, so what do I know! :P That lock seems perfect to keep it out of the hands of curious kids who think it's a toy.

For protection, I used to keep a baseball bat in my house in case I needed "something"... only time I ever used it was a few years ago, at about 3am when I heard all kinds of noises downstairs (door, ladder, etc...). I grabbed the bat, went halfway down the stairs and yelled "Who the @#&! is down there?!" It was my roommate's father... he was doing electrical work on the house earlier in the day, and woke up in the middle of the night realizing he had hooked something up wrong. He was so worried the house would burn down from it, he came back in the middle of the night to fix it.

So, we had a pretty good laugh about that later. He probably apologized to me every time he saw me for the next year.

The one pictured previously is obviously for defense. I bought it so I could retire two Raven .25 ACP's that I inherited from a psychotic uncle. Compared to the .25's, a baseball bat would surely be more formidable. All a .25 is liable to do is make someone mad.

Update:

We made it through the winter at my school without a snow day being called. There were some rough drives to/from work and a couple of early dismissals and one late start, but no full day. Now that it is officially spring we have our first snow day tomorrow. With the conference I was at the first part of the week that means I have a 2 day work week

UPDATE:

Are you noticing a lack of "Authoritative projections with vociferous sub tones" in your tuba playing? Yes? You need one of these.

Switched to ATT's new everything media/communucation system, U-verse, yesterday. The techie's were here from 8:30AM till 4PM. They Finally got the TV's, phones, and internet up and running........ sort of. It was left up to me to get the computers linked up to the gateway. Took from 4PM to 7PM and 4, yes 4, seperate calls to the help center to get internet access working on the computers. From 7 PM to 1:30 AM I worked on email. What a CF! 3 hours on the phone to 3 differnet techies who do not have a clue as to how to handshake this with Outlook. They told me multiple times that Outlook was not their problem. I finally figured out the combination of passphrases and settings on my own at 1AM. It will save me $100 a month over the combination of personal and business services I was using, but I was beginning to doubt my decision. New stuff is nice, but............................

That is exactly opposite of my experience with U-verse. The tech was here less than 4 hours and had everything hooked up correctly and even sat down to teach me how to use the remotes and menus on the tv. He even gave me the Outlook stuff.

I have done the unthinkable and applied for a real, grown-up, drop-everything-and-move-there job. Wish me luck. Unless you applied for the same job, that is.

The TV and phone was a breeze and the techie was great. THe online/phone help centers were terrible however. The computer that was giving me grief hooking up to the gateway has now lost connection with it's wireless adapter so it may have been Dell all along. We'll know Monday. I really like the U-verse service where it is working.

7:30am and brisket on the smoker. First time I've done it with a rub and decided that my pork rub would suffice just fine. I've recently had a hankerin' for some slow-smoked beef.

Prom day at the high school today. I'll be there to chaparone and to DJ although the term DJ in this sense means that I set-up my PA system, which is much beger and better than most DJ's, and they bring me an Ipod with the playlist all set to go. I am getting to old for this. It is going to be a long day, er, I mean night

Hey Chad, you can show off your "classic" dance moves and wow the youngsters by showing them how hip you really are.
