flat 4th tuning on King 2268/... etc?

Post by Bob Kolada »

Can the 4 front valve American baritones be tuned flat in the 4th valve and play chromatically down to the pedal with 3rd valve slide pulls like the 2280, 2J,...?

Thanks!

No exact math can be done without empirical tests measurements. However some rough rules of thumb say that an in tune 4th valve adds 1/3 of the theoretical length of the main bugle. If the 3rd valve is pulled to make the addition of 1+2+3 a perfect tritone, then those 3 loops combined add 0.414 of the theoretical length of the main bugle.

THe low B natural need a lengthening of 0.888 of the theoretical length of the main bugle, but the valves mentioned above only add 0.747 of the theoretical length of the main bugle. So you will need another pull of 0.141 of the theoretical length of the main bugle.

The first valve loop is 0.122 of the theoretical length of the main bugle. Just for an illustrative comparison of the extra pull needed.
