Its alot fun..Look in the schools old band instruments room or on ebay, for the parts. I would be happy to help you making one .. Its a Olds Bell with a (F) and a king Baritone 3 valve set ,the tubes are king size... So you end up with a 4valve Bass bone

I play tuba in my school jazz band and just have a few questions. I did some research and found out that it's not uncommon to have a tuba in a jazz band. But they typically play a bass part.
Best wishes

Haha, tuba is so amazing, I don't see why there's not more of us ladies!

I don't really listen to jazz actually. To tell the truth, I didn't like jazz until I played it. But right now we are playing Moanin, Blue Miles, and Afro Blue. We've played Puffy Taco, Summertime, Birdland, Fly Me to the Moon, Brick House, Shake Rattle and Roll, Stompin at the Savoy, some random blues that we made up, and whatever i forgot.

I played all of it on tuba. Then I switched to baritone. And now, I finally switched to trombone. But we are only playing the three new pieces. So I'm playing trombone for Afro Blue, bari for Blue Miles, and tuba for Moanin. There are only two weeks until our concert. I'm hoping I can play trombone for Blue Miles by then so i won't have to figure out how to switch between three instruments.

Let me just say, Moanin is my all-time favorite jazz piece!!!!!!! although the falls at the beginning are screwing me up. Switching from bone or bari right to playing pedal notes as loud as possible on tuba is harder than I thought! But it is so amazing!

Thanks for the replies!

I have had the pleasure of holding down the tuba chair with NOJO (the Neufeld Occhipinti Jazz Orchestra) for a number of years where I function as an extension of the brass section, sitting to the left of 3 'bone players and playing the occasional solo.

On my own jazz tuba cd, Buckhorn Morning, I play a lot of melody and blow a number of solos as part of an 8 piece band. I think that the possibilities for tuba in a big band jazz setting are numerous; we just have to get out there and try things without letting others define what our musical role will be.

So here's the deal:
Over the summer we are having jazz and are going to get actual gigs for money :D
But...I am tired of trombone... This school trombone is junk. And it's rather sad. I am no where close to playing as well as the other trombone players. So... I am thinking about switching back to tuba for jazz. I'm going to tell everyone today at rehearsal. But we still don't have a director, so this shall be interesting...
What do ya think?

Thanks, Erica :tuba:

I've done it. It is not the most ideal but it can work. Truly though, if you want to get better trombone chops just keep playing what you've got. It may not be the best, but it will give you practice on the slide and practice making a bad horn sound better. It took me years to get my trombone chops going, and they're still not where I'd like them, but I am much better at it because I played my bone in the groups and practiced the snot out of my parts on my own.

Some of the bad sounding chords you're hearing might be because you're playing the wrong octave — especially if it's a 7 or 9 chord where the B-Tbone might have the 7th or 9th. You're probably used to playing the root of the chord (bass part).

Yea... So the old drum major who is conducting now won't let me play tuba :(
...AND neither will our new director
Well he said he'd think about it. Which means no.

But I don't get why EVERYONE I've talked to (except you guys) is SO against tubas in jazz!!!!!!!

So unless the new director will let me play tuba or I can get a hold of a bass trombone, I am done with jazz... :(

Easy answer: TIMBRE -

It just doesn't fit in a TRADITIONAL ensemble. This is important to consider when you think about the balance of the group. When you have a bass player and a piano, those parts are covered and you don't want the balance of the sound to go all in one direction.

However, you might ask your band director if you can play certain arrangements of "Goodbye Porkpie Hat" that have a TUBA SOLO.

Don't give up on Jazz. You will have many opportunities in college and beyond to play Tuba in Jazz settings, but use this time in high school to develop your fundamental jazz skills and practice jazz on your Tuba. No one is stopping you. Get a "real book" pitched in C and go to town.

A tuba simply isn't a bass trombone. All the begging and pleading in the world won't change that. The vast majority of charts your jazz band plays will be scored for 4 trombones. The bass trombone is able to play more easily above the staff, can do glissando effects that won't sound at all the same on a tuba, and sounds completely different in the low register (somewhat akin to ripping fabric).

There might be 1 in 150 charts that actually have a part for tuba. Your chance of seeing one of those in high school is almost nil. That said, learn bass trombone. It's a valuable double that might serve you well in the future. It's really not that hard if you apply yourself.

To both of you:

We have several pieces with an actual tuba part. But they still won't let me play tuba :(

And I'm trying to play bass bone. But I can't convince anyone to let me. And I don't have a steady enough income to just do it myself.

The school has an extra bari sax, maybe I'll pick that up :|

Well, that's weird. If the pieces you are playing have tuba parts you would think they would want a tuba player to play them. I'm a jazz professor at a Big XII university and I've seen exactly (1) chart with a tuba part in the last ten years. Are you sure that these are pieces the band is playing this fall?

I apologize for the presumption of recommending you learn bass trombone. Obviously, if you don't have an instrument to use that would be very difficult. As for bari sax, that's even easier. It was my first "band" instrument. When I went to Interlochen for my first summer, I offered to audition on bari sax to have a better chance to make a band (luckily, I got the bass chair in the top band).

Maybe they are just "out to get you," as it were.
