I just finished three weeks of playing exclusively French tuba in the orchestra (French repertoire, plus Mendelssohn). Like Joe, yesterday I picked up the Nirschl and had the same "exclamation mark" moment. Mighty fine. :D

After years of being an idiot, thinking I couldn't afford to do it without asking anyone's opinion, my horn is finally in the shop having the dents removed. I can finally show my face at the retirement home, where an old tuba player says to me each year I play there, "I thought you were going to get that thing fixed". Shame his memory is better than mine.

I'm also having strap hooks added to it, so no more "clang" in the middle of a performance when the plastic hooks bang against the bows and bell stack. :D

I've been in bed with viral bronchitis for the past 2 weeks. I did a dress rehearsal on Friday and a concert on Saturday, those were terrible ideas. I felt like i was going through menopause, with all of the hot flashes. Im going to school for the first time tomorrow. Wish me luck!

I am currently suffering from the migrating cold. I get a cold with one type of symptom, begin to recover and then come down with another cold with different symptoms. Waiting for spring, decent weather and an end to the migrating cold. :x

I'm a few weeks late to update here... but a few Thursdays ago, I found out I'm losing my job (company is closing the division). The VERY next day (not even 24 hours later), I had a job offer from another company (I start next week). Better work and more money... I am VERY thankful for that good luck!

Financial disaster. Again. My second IRS audit in as many years. I keep forgetting to report income from selling charts to schools or random gigs that I never get W-2s for. This time the IRS is charging me $1200 in back taxes for 2009. GRRR!!!

UPDATE -

My blog now has a different background to accomodate a few people who had trouble reading it.

I have a few interesting audio interviews coming up as well as recordings!

NOTE - It is called SousaCentral, but it is about Tubas as well. Don't let the title keep you from visiting.

The frozen tundra has given way to the flooded plain. The bigger park here in town was half snow covered, half green grass 2 days ago. Today, it was a lake and spreading its reach across Main St trying to get to the other side

Keeps raining in the WV hills...the nearby river is getting scary.

Still waiting on graduate school letters, hopefully hearing from them soon.

Quickly finding out how awesome it is to play orchestral bass trombone on Hindemith's Symphonic Metamorphosis (tuba is still my first love).

My first tuba gigs this year are in Tampa, Florida area. Gonna drive down on the 27th, play beach bar on the 28th and on the 29th, we play again at the Nav-i-gator, the coolest parrot head sea-side bar in the universe.
We then play a house concert on the 30th, and drive back the 1st of may.
House concerts are a new way of gigging these days and are becoming increasingly popular.
A homeowner invites 20 to 50 friends over and each couple pays $15 to $25 and brings their favorite beverages to drink and a chair. the hosts provide finger food, setups and pay the band. This can work for any ensemble of reasonable size.
The band shows up for a cocktail social and a pass through the chow line, then plays (usually) three hours or until the crowd thins out.
Guests who are over served usually live nearby and can stagger or crawl home if need be. Driving is avoided, normally, but designated drivers are available.
We pronounce it Guf Coast

After reading a few post the other day regarding very important data, I discovered that I have been imprudent and politically incorrect. So, with the help of Schleppy and his finite powers, I have crossed over into the promised land, (although, I hope only temporarily) of being politically correct. I have successfully changed my handle/login to the more appropriate title of; TundraTUBAIST. You have been updated, and I feel some much more whole for it all. Thanks you all for leading me straight. :D

With that spelling now, is it pronounced "Tundra - toob' āst" ?

Could you update me as to how to change your handle? Some forums allow it, but that does not seem to be the case here. Do I need to contact Sean?
