Engraving a euphonium

Post by hald »

I'm having a 1967 Besson satin silver euphonium restored and would like suggestions on engraving and plating. I'd like to incorporate the original engraving, which is a very simple design, and also some engraved decoration, such as a garland on the upright bell. I'm having a heck of a time finding images of engraved euphoniums, especially Besson, from which to get inspiration. I am hoping people might post images of engraved euphoniums and tubas, and offer suggestions.

Does anyone here have an instrument done in charcoal silver (a uniform charcoal colored silver finish)? It's popular with sterling collectors and jewelers. Is jeweler's black ever used to decorate silver instruments? In jewelry making it's often used to obtain a uniform black surface on silver. Is there a reason it isn't used on instruments? A black lace effect might look nice inside the bell...

I searched the topic engraving on tubenet and found some excellent threads. Also searched out on the web. Thanks in advance for suggestions. -hald

Maybe you should get in touch with Dan Oberloh. His webpage has some of the projects he has done. One of them includes a bell engraving. His work is amazing, to say the least.

You might also want to check on Charley Brighton's webpage. He has some older euphoniuns with lovely bell designs. Even though engravings are not common on bessons they were on booseys before.
