Hey all,
I attended the Boston Symphony Orchestra concert tonight (which was fantastic, in case you were wondering), and the brass section members had these weird plastic-looking shields behind each player. I'm not sure what they were...does anyone have any ideas? (if this is a stupid question, sorry...and no, it wasn't just the horn players)

Yup. Those 'blast panels' are normally found IN FRONT of the trumpets and trombones.

Somehow, this clip seems fitting:DP wrote:... because the strings often grouse about the back row ... which is why bloke asked if the percussion was behind the brass. Percussion at ear level can give ya tinnitus (and you thought the whining strings were bad!)TubaTinker wrote:Yup. Those 'blast panels' are normally found IN FRONT of the trumpets and trombones.

ON THE OTHER HAND, in a former life, when a substitute tympanist displayed particular vigor a few inches form my head, I was know to place a few quarters on the drums under the music stand between the drums. After a puzzled silence, they usually got the message...
Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?
