I did not notice clear plastic on the ends of the ones I just received. However, I do like the feel of the springs. Maybe I had better pull them and look again.

I agree with you about the proper amount of tension. I have never had a problem with the coating sloughing off though.

I rather like the Swiss bumpers. I really hate spring noise. Even when seated properly I can't seem to shake it on most horns.

The trouble I find with most other Tuba springs sold by the repair houses is that they are either far too strong or far too weak. I think that the Yamaha springs (coating or not) is the porridge that Goldilocks chose.
