yamaha silent brass for euphonium

i recently purchased the one for tuba and i hate it. im going to return it to woodwind and brass wind. Its not worth the 300 dollars, its more worth it to change your practice schedule around so you dont have to practice at night. Although, i didnt like it mostly because of the design. the euphonium silent brass uses the "normal" design. The tuba one is quite different. If you get it, make sure it has a money back guarantee, thats all i suggest.

Yes, they do work. But why do I still prefer my old Wick metal practice mute?
Because I can make that ring like mad on a good day. The yamaha is also heavy and protrudes out of the bell a lot, affecting the balance.

how does it play, besides the balance issue? Does it play more like you have nothing in your bell, or does it play more like a mute?

In other words, is it actually productive to practice with it, or is it just making you better at playing with a mute in?

Hi,

To me, you certainly know you have a mute in when playing, though the sound is very clear in your ears. The projection in the Church setting works well, though it can flatter you a great deal. It's worth repeating what you have just played in the Studio setting straight afterwards.

I use it weekly I suppose, as opposed to the Wick which I use nearly every day on warm ups.

I've used (borrowed) the silent brass setup a few times for my Yamaha 641 euph when I've gone out of town to visit my grandkids (so I could practice while the kids were sleeping). It is heavy like Charley said, and you do feel some added back pressure to your air supply. I also liked the 'church' setting the best on the electronics package. But I don't like alot of reverb cranked in. I did notice that if I pushed the earpieces further in my ears that I didn't hear the muffled muted sound as much. Maybe a better set of earphones that cover your ears completely would work better.
