King 2341 in CC?

Greetings,

I have heard and read nothing but good things about the King 2341 (well built, solid, good "all around" tuba, etc). So my question is, is/was there ever a CC version? Or a comparable tuba in CC (i.e. medium size bore, four pistons, 4/4) with a reputation like the King? I've seen the Harvey Phillips Holton 330 discussed, but have heard less than glowing reports on it. Thanks for your input!

The custom "Frankentubas" built by Sam Gnagey use a 2341 (I believe) body and valve set, cut to CC, with a large-throated bell from various very old tubas. Very good horns.

Weren't the 52, 54, 56J just basically factory chop-jobs on the King 2341 with an added 5th?

I do have a 1241 in CC. It's a fun horn with a .750 bore. It has both upright and recording bells. It served as my kicking-around-tuba when gigs were to hazards to use my HB-2P or a recording bell set up was desired. As a note: The factory CC horns are not ''chop jobs'', they have there own specific branch tapers (2-5) and bends that are not really interchangeable with there BBb brothers.

Sam Gnagey cuts 2341/1241 to CC on a regular basis. People seem to like them, and it looks like Sam does a nice job.

The CB-50's have a comparable bore size, but the profile of the bell gives the sound a different quality in my opinion. Not bad, just different.

If you want a similar CC Tuba, find a 52J. The 52J as opposed the the 56J because of the smaller bell.

I second the motion of Sam's tubas being top playing instruments. I've owned one for years now, and I still love it.

The Closest thing to a 2341 would be a 56J. They have the same bell and, are basically cut down Kings. But I'll throw in with the majority here and vote for a Sam custom horn. The assembly will be WAY better and he uses old York and Holton bells etc.There's definitely something special about the brass York used. I may try to get an old York bell to put on my 2341. Ed
