Tuba-involved jazz combo (ITEC 2012)

Post by The Jackson »

Howdy, friends!

I am very interested in entering the ITEC conference's jazz competition and wanted to ask about combos with a tuba soloist in them. For the tape round, I'd like to have a group of friends of mine playing the tunes.

One of the questions I have is whether or not I want a bass player. On the tuba, I'd just be soloing and not covering any "bass" playing. Would a bassist (guitar or double bass) be intrusive and "mess" with the solo tuba playing (because they're both in the same, low register)?

I'm really lucky to have so many great friends at school that have been playing jazz for years that would be eager to help me out with this venture. I'm thinking that I'd like that have one other soloist with me, probably a saxophonist, drummer, as well as either a piano player or a rhythm guitar player.

Does this sound about right? Jazz is a pretty new thing for me, so any feedback from you guys who have done it would be appreciated! Thanks! :tuba:

FYI: The tunes for the tape round are:

- Oleo (in Bb)
- Have You Met Miss Jones (in F)
- tune of choice

For the third one, I'm thinking of My Funny Valentine, The Way You Look Tonight, Harlem Nocturne, or Isfahan. Any suggestions for that would also be welcomed!
