I seem to remember hearing that he was using an HB-2, quite a bit, but I would not take that to the bank!

Oh, surely not. That is such a beginner horn. A musician of his stature wouldn't use a 186 and surely a major symphony would never allow such a riffraff instrument into its ranks. Next thing we'll hear is that Mr. Roger Bobo regularly performed on a 186!

Everyone knows the only thing that matters at an audition the only thing that matters is personal equipment. That's why you should always buy the most expensive instrument cause you can't possibly win with a miraphone 186. :D

I also vaguely recall that he won the Chicago job on a Yorkbrunner. When he came to the LA Phil for a year or so in the early 90s, he was definitely playing on a Yorkbrunner.

I thought I heard that he won it playing on a Gronitz BAT CC. ...or maybe that was Alan Baer...

I think the real interesting question is in finding out which mouthpiece he used.

I think he switched to the HB-50 from the HB-2 when he was in St. Louis, maybe @1986. I have no idea what tuba he used to audition in Chicago, but it would be no surprise if it was a 186 since I think he played a 188 for a bit many years back.

I think it was Alan Baer who won his job on a PCK.

Regarding CC tubas used:
For the Chicago job, I used my Hirsbrunner-York copy. (1988)
For the LA Phil., I used the better of the CSO Yorks. (1991)
For the St. Louis Sym., I used a Miraphone 186-5U for the recorded round and then a Hirsbrunner 4/4 rotary for the "live" round. (1983)
For the Utah Symphony, there was no audition. They just needed somebody fast after the untimely death of Charles Eckenrode. (1978)
For the Israel Philharmonic, I used my Miraphone 186-5U. (1975)

Hope this helps. Cheers, Gene

Thank you, Mr. Pokorny! You can't get a better source than the musician, himself.
