HTC 4g GPS issues
Having GPS failures on my HTC 4g phone. It was really good for about two months but lately really undependable. I lose the GPS signal frequently causing me to get lost or show up at the wrong place. Sometimes the phone can only find my location to the nearest 5 miles. Not good. Ready to throw it our the window. Anybody else having these issues?

Re: HTC 4g GPS issues
I finally asked enough questions at the ATT store to get pointed in the right direction on the web, although I must admit the store dosen't really know anything and ATT phone support is non existent. It seems that ATT and most other cell phones use a combination of phone tower and satellite signals to run their GPS systems. The data, maps etc., comes from the cell tower and your location is pinpointed by satellite. Some systems use cell towers for both. In any event when you lose phone service you lose your navigation ability. The software just freezes. In a rural area this is a huge problem. I was lost for 2 hours last week looking for a client's rural house. I finally got him from a land line and got directions. The reason my phone performed so well in the beginning and not now is that ATT is doing their 4G upgrade in Atlanta to be finished by October. We are getting tons of dropped calls during this upgrade. Everytime this happens I lose my navigation. I use this everyday to get me to appointments. It is huge. I am pissed. Even after October, if I get in a rural area where the signal is problematical, I cannot depend on the GPS. The solution is to find a droid app that works the way Garmin does. The map data has to reside on the phone's memory chips and you only need the satellite signal for navigation. Wallah! Enter Co-Pilot. Cheap, lots of features, satellite only. I'll report back when I've had a chance to play test the beast.

The guy at the ATT store has an iPhone and is having the same problems. It's a system design issue.jonesmj wrote:Trade it on Craigslist for an iPhone...

Hi-
If co-pilot works, great. If not, it is a more expensive app, but a great app: Navigon's MobileNavigator GPS app--for both droid and Apple. Good luck!

It's not that much more expensive, $25 vs $50, and it has all the features and a better looking screen. Hmmmmmmm. I'm glad to see there is a choice without going back to depending on ATT service.
