I'm also 49, turning 50 towards the end of the year. Yes, I'm going for it. I'm going to flash my AARP card everywhere. I'm taking all the discounts, from ten cents on a cup of coffee to anything else I can qualify for. I need the discounts to offset the increased premiums on my health insurance that are going to sock it to me big time for the "red zone" of health insurance: too old for a good rate, even though my particular health issue is taken care of by a generic $5 prescription of warfarin monthly, but too young for medicare.

Spend your money in any manner you wish. In my opinion, you are just wasting it. Your drivers license will get almost all of the same discounts, provided your DOB is early enough.

You must not have any businesses in your area that care. I live between Springfield and Branson. The majority of each community's economy is based on senior spending. I'm going to cut my expenses by literally thousands of dollars per year. You might think I'm joking, but I'm not. I'm dead (pun intended) serious. And with a birthday in December, no, my DOB is NOT early enough.

Of course AARP is a PAC. My undergrad is a political science degree. My graduate degree is a law degree. There's nothing in all the above posts I did not already know. I agree with some of the planks of their platforms, I disagree with others.

Setting aside the political debate about this particular organization, I'm sure everyone will agree that as time goes on and life expectancies and relative health increase, that seniors will be the largest voting block by demographic group, if not already. So organizations like this will have to be dealt with one way or another.

And I'm still going to get my discounts where I can.

RED GREEN: Take a second to talk to you older fellas about anger. Now, I don't mean your own anger, because that, of course, is perfectly healthy and natural and really needs to be expressed. Oh, yeah. If you didn't express your anger, how would the rest of the world learn anything? No, no, I'm talking about other people's anger. You know, now, the first question that goes through your mind is, "What can I do to please this person?" The answer, of course, is, nothing! You assume that because they're angry at you, they're angry at you! Other people aren't angry at you. Or what you do or how you do it. They're just angry. Yeah, you happen to be handy for them to be angry at, that's all. So don't take it personally. Let me explain it another way: my wife, Bernice, is always chilly, always got the extra sweater on. Now, just because she's chilly, doesn't mean she's chilly at me. She's just chilly, you know? So some people are just tall, some people are just happy, some people are just angry. And the best way to deal with anger is the possum way: roll over and play dead. Oh, yeah. I'll tell you why: it's very hard to be angry at a dead thing. Just ask my wife. Remember, I'm pulling for you. We're all in this together.

Sage advice. And we are all in this together. I am very thankful for all of the discourse, discussion, and even if it gets to the point of argument at times. In the end, we all have a beer (or beverage of choice) and still have fun playing our chosen instrument.
