New Tubist in Timonium
I just moved to Timonium (Baltimore) and am looking for a group that could use a tuba player: brass quintet, tuba/euph ensemble, community band...
Retired, semi-pro, used to be pretty good.

Why do people put all this crap down here, anyway?

The guy you really needed to talk to passed away a year ago or so, unfortunately. He played in, I seem to recall, a community band in Catonsville. But there are other guys in the area who can fill you in. I work there, but I live about 75 miles away and all my similar activities are in Virginia.tubarex wrote:I just moved to Timonium (Baltimore) and am looking for a group that could use a tuba player: brass quintet, tuba/euph ensemble, community band...

Baltimore is also home to Baltimore Brass, also in Catonsville. Hide your checkbook now before it's too late!

Back when I was doing the travel thing and I was starting to know folks at O'Hare by their first names, someone close to me told me they envied me and thought it would be great to travel as part of their job. I seem to recall that I said somehing more expletive laden than "don't be silly". The worst was a series of be in Chicago on Monday morning and back in Houston on Tuesday morning that lasted for nearly three months. I changed jobs not long after that.Rick Denney wrote:Don't be silly.

The only thing worse than traveling is having to commute to Baltimore.Mark wrote:Back when I was doing the travel thing and I was starting to know folks at O'Hare by their first names, someone close to me told me they envied me and thought it would be great to travel as part of their job. I was hoping to keep the thread alive and at the top of the list long enough for "hbcrandy" or "bort" to jump in with what they might know. But they have to be around first, and I don't know if they are. Look up those user names and send 'em a PM.tubarex wrote:Well, that's helpful...I guess

Re: New Tubist in Timonium
Welcome to Baltimore.
As for playing opportunities, there are some possibilities. There is the Baltimore County Concert Band under the baton of Chris Wolfe at the Essex Community College, about 1/2 hour's drive from you. If you are willing to drive for 45 minutes to one hour, there is the Columbia Concert band in Columbia, Maryland or the Bel Air Community Band under the baton of Scott Sharnetzka in Bel Air, MD.
Send me a personal E-Mail at hbcrandy@hotmail.com" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank. Maybe we can meet in person and play some duets.

Re: New Tubist in Timonium
Hi,
Right there is Timonium is a community band called The Chesapeake Concert Band led by Matt Elky. They rehearse at Ridgley Middle School. They could definitely use a bit more PR because it took me a while to find even a little bit of info on them. About all I can give you is the director's e-mail - meeelky@aol.com" target="_blank. I helped them out for a concert let summer because they only had one other tuba player. Decent group. Bel Air Community Band and Columbia Community Band are both very good.

I did the Chesapeake Band for a few years, it was a fun group! Was really cool to play at Fort McHenry with them!

Thanks for the info - I drove up to Bel Air yesterday to check out the area. I will follow up on the rest of these possibilities.
