help and source for parts wanted

Post by sousaphone68 »

I have just recieved the 4 valve BBb that I unexpectedly won on eBay its condition is not too bad despites DHL and the post offices best attempts to destroy it.
It does have some serious pitting in two of the valves.
I can bodge the pitting and make the tuba playable with some new bumpers but I would like to try and source some new rotars if possible I have attached a photo of the tuba there is no visible makers name or model there is a small hand engraved 8W on the bell that i think is probably a bands inventory mark.
Can anybody advise on a likely source for parts and what measurements a supplier would require to spec the parts.
Cant carry a tune but I can carry a tuba.

It's not likely that you'll find rotors that will 'drop into' that horn.

I was thinking of brazing a filler patch on the underneath of the rotor as a bodge it has been done to the 4th valve already.
do you have any other suggestions or tips?

I don't understand what you mean...

What is a bodge, and why would you do it?

A little clarification and I might be able to help you out.

A bodge is a European expression for a make do mend especially if it's a hidden repair.
The reason for thinking about a bodge in this case is the value of the tuba and it's quality of manufacture and quality of sound does not warrant anything better if the repair can not be done cheap then I have an expensive wall hanger on my hands. Which serves me right for not following my own eBay rules.
Having said all that I would still like to try and find out more about the tuba now that I have in my hands it is very light despite being a BBb 4 valve and would if repaired do for some street gigs I do at Christmas time so if anybody can suggest a source for rotors please do.

Looks very Cerveny-esque to me...
SD

I am convinced that 90% of the problems with rhythm, tone, intonation, articulation, technique, and overall prowess on the horn are related to air issues.

Does that mean if i measure the diameter of the rotors and post them that a tubeneter can then confirm or deny that a Cerveny rotor will fit and can be sourced? :tuba:

NO.

Here is what you need to do. Find a repair shop and have them rebuild the rotors.

However, this will probably cost much more than the horn is worth.

OR you could find a repair shop and have them service the instrument and make it play as well as they can in it's present condition. This will involve swedging the rotors, cleaning it and making sure everything is properly fit.

In my opinion, you aren't going to be able to find NEW parts for this instrument.

Thanks for that Klaus, much appreciated.

That being said, don't "bodge" your Tuba.
