Small Bb w 4v

As I understand the Yamaha 103 is now more or less an instrument with cult status and not that easy to find anymore. Such a small 3v Bb is great in some situations. As for a 4v Bb approx the same size I believe there is/was a Weril instrument that is now almost as difficult to find as the Yahama 103. When browsing Mackbrass pages, for a left handed bass trombone , I found the TU520L which I think is the JBBB 520 and seems to fit the specs. Any comments on that model?

The 520 is a winner, but I would send you to Wessex Tubas. Mack or myself would have to charge a lot to ship a Tuba your way...There are 2 Yamaha 6XX inspired BBb's available too...the rorary version is a JinBao 855, I'm unsure about the piston version. Keep in mind that ANY JinBao dealer can order a model not listed on their site. That holds true for myself, Mack, Wessex, TE, Laabs, MM, etc... Also, don't give up on finding a suitable used instrument! Just be sure you can try before you buy, and give it a good going over!

Almost as hard to find is the Yamaha YBB621 which is the 4 valved pro version of the 103. In my opinion this is a very fine playing small BBb. Not sure how the used Yamaha market is in your area, but I know these are a little hard to find here in the states. I do believe these are still available new, though much more expensive than the Jin Bao horns. Good luck.

Have you play tested the 520 and possibly compared it to a YBB103 or the Weril 4v same size, and is the 520 approx the same size as these?

Well, used Yamahas are rare here. However just for fun I browsed the webpages of a local musicstore for a YBB621. As you said it is a bit more expensive than the Jinbao though, with todays exchange rate a new one will cost the equivalent of USD 12500...

So, anybody tried the JBBB520, which I beleive also is on the Italian ebay with the inspiring name New Orleans TB-818?

Hmm, before I found mine it was almost impossible to find one, at least here in Europe, and one that was not costing a fortune?! Now they are flooding the net. Maybe not that cult... Anyway, it is a great instrument.

I read a review by Jens Bjørn-Larsen of the YFB-621 in a magazine I stopped subscribing to in 1986.

As for the BBb-103 I see the potentials for a post-valve block (that is above the valve block) 4th rotor addition. To be operated by a thumb trigger.

I know where to find BOTH Yamaha 103's and the Weril equivalent. The Weril model number for the old version of this horn is the J680. The new version is model J690.

That is to say, the second valve slide and the positioning of the valve section

Have just spotted your post! Yes, I tried the JBBB-520 while in China and it is a nice small BBb with no obvious intonation problems and quite good tone, although I personally preferred the same size rotary JBBB-500 playing them back to back as that seemed to have a fuller low register.

Jon, Just let me know if you want me to order either the 500, or 520 for you? They are not models I am as yet stocking, but may well do in the future.

Weril J690 has removable valve section. There is also a CC model J691.
