I’m a composer who has written a Tuba Quartet

Post by JulieHarting »

Hello tuba players:

I am a composer. I have written a tuba quartet which was premiered by the XL Tuba Quartet in Zagreb Croatia at the ISCM World New Music Days last April. The piece is called “Catacombs of Light”. It is scored for Wagner tuba, euphonium, and two tubas. I also have a version for 4 tubas. It’s about ten minutes long.

There is a pdf of the score (the Wagner tuba, euphonium version) on my website - http://www.julieharting.com/comp.htm. There’s also an mp3 recording of the piece there. It’s pretty distorted but it can give you an idea of the piece.

If you are interested in performing the piece, email me at julieharting@yahoo.com" target="_blank" target="_blank and I will send you the score and parts.

I didn't see the version for four tubas on your web site. Did I overlook it?

Yes... I saw that one. She mentioned another version for four tubas. That's the one I'm looking for.

Umm, TubaTinker, that is the link to the 4 tuba version. At least it was for me.

I don't see the mp3 file. Am I crazy? (potentially two separate issues)

While all the parts are generically marked "tuba," you'll notice at the link that the top part is written in treble clef, F transposition (for Wagner Tube) and, while the 2nd part is playable on bass tuba, the range makes it pretty difficult on tuba and relatively easy on euphonium (tenor tuba).

Dan is looking for another arrangement that the composer mentioned in the OP.

Hope that helps clear things up!

Sorry for the confusion everyone -

I just put the 4 tuba version on my website so now both versions are there. http://www.julieharting.com/comp.htm The mp3 recording is the Wagner tuba version. Thanks for your interest in the piece and please feel free to email me if you have any questions or if you would like the score and parts. (julieharting@yahoo.com" target="_blank" target="_blank). I'll send them to you for free - I'm just looking for some players who might be interested in performing it.

I played tuba when I was a kid (ages 9-19) and my father played tuba in the Reading PA symphony orchestra - so the piece was fun to write - a way to connect to my past! I love those low deep sounds!

I wrote the original version for 4 tubas but the XL Tuba Quartet consists of Wagner tuba, euphonium and 2 tubas so I rescored it and changed a few things for that group.

It seems to me that the only adjustment that needs to be made, to make the quartet work in the EETT format, is to change the Wagner tuba part to concert pitch, bass clef. The 2nd tuba part can remain as it is in the original.
