The earthquake has come and gone, and now Irene is on her way.

Good luck and Godspeed to all of you in the path of the storm. I'm not sure if I will have to evacuate yet or not, or if we will choose to leave sooner. I'm in Zone B on the evacuation map for NYC.

Ben is in Zone A, which is the greatest risk for flooding.

Plus the countless others here from the Carolinas through NY/NJ through New England.

Please keep us all in your thoughts and prayers.

Thankfully, despite being so close to NYC, we are not in a flood zone here. There's a large cliff between us and the Hudson River, and we're far enough from the Hackensack river that we really have no need to fear flooding. Just hoping to avoid wind damage. I've got food and water enough, so we should be fine.

I've weathered plenty of hurricanes in Maryland, but something about being on an island this time vs. the mainland freaks me out. Kinda feel like driving to Buffalo or Cleveland or something just to get the H out of here!

I don't know what I will be doing currently. They will be announcing evacuation plans today while I am at work. If they evacuate I hope I will be allowed to return to secure a few items. First hurricane for me.

It appears we are directly in the path of this thing (central LI), or on the east side of it. Gloria was bad enough with no power for 13 days and trees down on my house and all over the yard. Hopefully, we won't get it that bad. If it's downgraded to a tropical storm and winds 40-50mph, we can deal with it. Either way, clean up on Monday won't be fun as I'll also be prepping for my colonoscopy on Tuesday!!

I wish everyone in H. Irene's path the best of luck. Irene was 180 miles to our east yesterday (West Palm Beach, FL) so we missed this one. We still did get some gusts during feeder band passages of up to 45mph. I've been through a number of hurricanes in my 50 years living here in S. FL, but this one is very large and the forecast path up or near the I-95 corridor is one of the worst paths as it could affect a lot of people. I would suggest that everyone follow local government recommendations as far as prep and evacuations. Hopefully Irene turns a bit more to the east and moves off the coast. Good luck.

Agreed, I don't think it will be as bad as the fear-mongering news likes to portray. I still gotta move out for an undetermined amount of time. We are evacuating to zone C (cat. 3 will flood). My wife owns a studio and I usually have all of my tubas there. Funny that she is letting friends and family stay there this weekend so I moved all of my tubas to the zone 1 (evacuation) earlier this week for my own peace of mind...

1. Tubas are going to be hiding in the windowless bathrooms towards the center of the bldg.
2. I hope I can get back to zone 1 before a paying 1x rehearsal Tuesday and the subsequent single/double quintet gig on Wednesday.
3. I don't mind to much if this obstructs my ability to go to work (Princeton, NJ area) on Monday.

We are riding it out on Roosevelt Island. Me, wife, and dog will huddle in a hallway or closet. Coworker in Bklyn will put us up if we have to evacuate , if we can get there. Not looking forward to it.

Hal, I've been to Denver and north from there several times. Love it!

At least folks in hurricane-prone areas get a couple of days notice. Here in the mid-west... things can get very nasty in fifteen minutes!

Now... EARTHQUAKES are different story altogether!

The government rushed in tens of thousands of civilians (who would have otherwise been unemployed) to mitigate the effects of that disaster and to deal with the aftermath. I wish we had that kind of leadership in the previous and present administrations. Fortunately, when parts of central Tennessee became a temporary lake a year ago, several large church organizations did something similar, although admittedly on a smaller scale.

Ain't that the truth. And now more than any other time in history, the technology makes the prediction even more in advance than it's ever been.

Went to work yesterday, stayed about 5 hours before calling it a day (no way I could concentrate on anything). Went straight to the grocery store at 2:00, and found it crowded, but calm and well stocked. Got about 8 gallons of water stocked up, plus beer, juice, and what's left of my year's supply of Snapple. Got my bag packed up with essential stuff for us and the dog.

Now we wait! Please keep us in your prayers!

(Or Michigan... maybe we could move to Michigan? Lots of family out there, and we like it a lot out there!)

We've got water, diet soda, plenty of food (for us and the cats), flashlights, candles, board games, fully charged Kindles (for reading), batteries for my radio, and charged phones. Ready for the worst, although I don't expect it. Better to be over-prepared than caught with your pants down.

Just got back from the Cheesecake Factory with my wife. We closed the place as they stopped letting people in after 7pm. We were the last ones to leave. Rain is moderate now and the wind is starting to pick up. It's supposed to get bad after 3 AM. My wife and I are sleeping downstairs in the den in case some trees decide to come down and take out our bedroom. Wudda world!

Long night, but we made it! Never lost power, no flooding, though high tide isn't for a few hours yet. Now time to figure out what to do and how to help others.

No loss of power, no flooding, no damage, we came through just fine. The flooding in nearby areas is pretty bad though. My landlord called to see how the place was, and said the Passaic River near where he lives flooded across two baseball fields, a football field, and into three houses. Luckily, he's a few houses down from where the water stopped. My brother also said the ground water levels pushed out the liner on his pool, so it's gonna cost him some serious money to have that fixed. Otherwise, everyone seems to be ok.
