Review of Christmas Quintet Music

Post by opus37 »

Our church quintet is starting it's search for Christmas quintet music. We are specifically looking for a single carol rather than and medley. We would like it to be around 3 to 4 minutes long. The group is probably a level 3 or 4. Some of our members are high school students. We're not looking for free music. I have been going through the sponsors and shops listings and have been finding several versions for things like, O Holy Night, Silent Night, The Bells Carol, Go Tell it on the Mountain, etc. I was wondering if anyone has played any carols like this and could give some guidance on which ones worked out and were fun to play.

The salvation army books work great, just pick out book 1&2 in the appropriate key for your trumpets, book 3 in F for your horn, book 4 for tuba and book 5 for trombone, this has worked very well for my group. It has many good arrangements.

There are 8 or so in the Canadian Brass Green Book. It says advanced on the website but it's not really. Very playable. Very listenable. Luther Henderson does a good job with these. We use them every year.

I am fortunate to have a great job that feeds my family well, but music feeds my soul.

The Salvation Army publishes several extended carol treatments for brass quartet (with optional 5th part) each year in the American Instrumental Ensemble Series (AIES) and the Unity Series Journal. The New Christmas Praise collection is also quite good. Joe Johnson (administrator of SA Southeastern Territory music store) can hook you up: (404)728-1383.

Here's a couple of Unity Series samples:

Once in Royal David's City (2008)

Silent Night(2004).
