Barenboim-CSO Complete Bruckner on CD
Not sure if anyone has posted this yet, but while perusing Arkiv Mucic, discovered that the Barenboim-CSO recordings of the complete Bruckner Symphonies will be released October 18.

I bought the box set of these on vinyl at Tower Records on Broadway in the 80's for under 20 bucks. One of the best investments I ever made. Inspired me as a player, and now 30 years later, I could probably sell them for 10 times that much.

Mr. Jacobs performance on the Bruckner 8th in this set is absolutely stunning. Even string players who have listened to it told me it was a marvelous tuba sound.
I've been looking for this for many years, and will buy the first available copy.

The very first CSO concert I ever attended was Guilini conducting Bruckner 8 in December 1975. I will NEVER forget the sound of the brass, and particularly the performance by Mr, Jacobs. A few years later, I was able to tape a live concert off the radio with Tennstedt conducting the 8th. Its almost as good as the 1975 concert. I may have to have someone dub it to CD for me, now that I think of it. The only flaw is a small gap in the third movement where the guy making the recording had to flip the cassette over (grrr).

A great set. I have the 8th on both vinyl and an earlier release of the CD set. The bass "presence" seems even better on my dub-to-CD from vinyl, but that may have had something to do with the transfer process.
Those who have not heard the Barenboim/CSO Bruckner 5 will also be in for a treat.
Just as an aside, I attended a 2008 CSO performance of Bruckner 5 when Jaap van Zweeden capably substituted for an ailing Riccardo Chailly (who was to conduct Mahler 10). During the pre-concert "talk", the presenter played the intro to the 5th from a cassette tape. The volume was cranked so high that tape hiss was very audible. I was watching an older gentleman across the room who had nodded off during the lecture......awaiting his reaction to the fortissimo chord at that volume. Alas, the presenter stopped the tape just before the anticipated chord and reaction.......

Thanks for the heads up regarding ordering from Amazon. I was going to wait and ask for this for Christmas, but couldn't pass up this great deal. Plus, with the Amazon Prime membership, you are guaranteed to receive it on the release date!

It is truly amazing. And very inspiring. But....how on earth did you get a string player to listen to a Bruckner symphony???

I had the complete set on vinyl and sold it on TubeNet about 5-6 years ago when I no longer had a turntable; it took months and I practically had to give it away.

And I am having the same issue with CD's now. That is almost giving them away/. Tons that are available through digital streaming whenever I need them rather than pulling them out or uploading to a computer to listen.MartyNeilan wrote:I had the complete set on vinyl and sold it on TubeNet about 5-6 years ago when I no longer had a turntable; it took months and I practically had to give it away.
Can the CD demise really be that dissimilar the demise vinyl suffered?

Actually, I had just gotten the recording and was on a two hour run-out, so I had a captive audience. Once people heard the first, "Oh my gosh," everybody wanted to hear it.DP wrote:Alex C wrote:Mr. Jacobs performance on the Bruckner 8th in this set is absolutely stunning. And yes, it was string players, plural.

The first work in that set that I heard was the 4th Symphony. Simply blew me away. The whole brass section was just ridiculously cohesive. It is tremendously inspiring music making. I am thrilled to have both the Solti and the Barenboim Bruckner sets with CSO. They are lessons unto themselves.

I remember seeing some of the 20 "worst" on the shelves and thinking to myself 'this isn't going to be very good'
