Re: Holton 345 flexability?
Holton's are surprisingly nimble, especially at soft and moderate volumes. In addition, they have a lot of weight when you need it.
Downside? It's hard to find Holton CC's which has as good a scale as your Conn.
Two things to consider:
1) the bottom line G will be flat; if you can lip it into pitch, it's considered to have good pitch;
2) the low register plays differently than most other tubas. If you blow forcefully in the low register, Holton's will seem to fight back. You have to relax and blow to make the low register respond.
I'm feeling nostalgic for a big horn right now. Hope it passes.

Both of my BBb's 345's have functioned well from quartet's on up to full concert wind ensemble & Orchestreal sized groups. Yep, they have idiosyncrasies, nothing a lot worse than other instruments, at twice the price.
