I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned here (or maybe it has?) I stumbled across a 2011 recording of Harrison Birtwistle's music called "Night's Black Bird" that also includes "The Cry of Anubis", a solo piece for tuba and orchestra performed by Owen Slade and The Halle. I like the piece and the tuba playing sounds fantastic. Just a FYI. Here's a link, and it's also available on iTunes.

Re: Grammy-winning Birtwistle recording
The Gramophone Awards and the GRAMMY Awards are two different beasts. This has won a Gramophone Award.

Orchestral tuba playing care of Ewan Easton and myself.
Owen was all bunged up with flu for the recording yet still sounds immaculate
