An eccentric band director I played under a while back said:
"Trombones are never out of tune, only the Trombonist is."
Yeah, but you could say that about any horn. With one exception: I used to have a Besson 3-v comp as well. Sold it to a friend, but can borrow it back any time. Now that's a horn which the opposite is true: the horn is always in tune, despite the player.
An old band director told me that the trombone is the only [brass] instrument that could--theoretically, at least--be played in tune on every note, the result of the fact that there are an almost infinite number of adjustments that could be made.
At a minimum, at least it's better than trying to tune a lawnmower.
I recently dropped out of a comm band because the T-bones were so bad. Guess how I voted?
Miraphone 5050 - Warburton BJ/RF mpc YEP-641S(recently sold), DE mpc (102 rim; I-cup; I-9 shank) Symphonic Band of the Palm Beaches: "Always play with a good tone, never louder than lovely, never softer than supported." - author unknown.
I've never thought of the trombone separate from the tuba. They make our sound, IMO, better when they're good...and we make them sound meaty, which is something that not even a great contrabass bone can provide. The CSO low brass CD is what made me fall in love with the trombone sound.
I played some bass trombone today with a pretty good 24-piece trombone choir. It was easy to impress them young-un's with a double pedal Bb on the last note of Pines of Rome. Suckers.
This is off track but regardless. I bought one of these Denis Wick Fiber mutes and I must say that I am impressed. It fits nicely in my bass and my tenor trombone. The sound is clearer, IMHO, than the stonelined mute. And it's CHEAP!!!! I payed 18.00 CAD$ with taxes.
So, if you are in the market for a mute, have a look at the wick. Here is the Amazon link:
