carnival of venice for f tuba and brass band?

Post by caroljantsch »

Hi TubeNetters,

I'm wondering if you can help me out--is there a version of Carnival of Venice arranged for tuba and brass band, but in the key of Bb (for F tuba)?

thanks,
carol

If so, it likely would be American. The European brass bands rarely use tubas in other pitches than Eb and BBb.

The easy work-around would be about you loaning a front action Eb and play it with the fingerings you are used to from your F tuba (if you have absolute pitch that would be a problem). Or if an arranger has an arrangement already entered in Ab, a transposition to Bb wouldn’t be entirely out of the question.

I did a pretty decent search for an arrangement in Bb for brass ensemble or quintet that was decent, and came up empty. If you have any luck, you might be kind enough to let me know :)

If Klaus' suggestion is an option:

If anyone happens to be near CT on November 6, Oystein Baadsvik will be performing this with Classic Brass at Eastern CT State University.

The sample hints towards a computer engraved arrangement. If the file still is operational, and if the arranger is willing to do it, a transposition from Ab to Bb wouldn’t be a totally impossible idea. I am aware a lot of slurs will have to be looked at because mid-staff stems will change direction.

Fairly easily done, but to find time is difficult between a million other charts...it might happen none-the-less!

If you are interested in having it arranged, you could contact Mark Freeh.
He is a master arranger, and specializes in Brass Band. You can find his info here;

Hope this helps.

We decided to bump up the one we have published through Cimarron Music Press and it should be available fairly soon...

And if you happen to be in CT Nov 6, you can catch Oystein Baadsvik performing the Ab version with CLassic Brass at Eastern Ct University!

AMILCARE: re Your post about the Carnival of Venice arrangement, which you
have computerized via FINALE. I do a good bit of solo work with the euph, each
year, (next, Canzonetta for Euphonium and Band, by Forte, with the Bonita Springs, Fla. Concert Band, in November). I have a good size library of euph,
cornet and trombone solos, with band arrangements, many of which are out of
print. . I am now working hard on the tuba to come up to speed, and add to my free lance work. I would be interested in the same arrangement that the young
lady is asking for, (Tuba in BBb), in return I would give you your pick of a series
of titles from my library. I believe you can get my email from the member page, or send me a PM, if you are interested. Thanks for your efforts to help the young
lady.

Carol, The Heritage Brass Band did this around a year ago with a solo f tuba. I am not sure how the soloist feels about having his private info on the web, so will not include his email address here, but I will provide it if you shoot me a private message or an email.

I am not sure what you'd like. I did this for a CC tubist. Actually for BBb any cornet version would suffice. Ideally, CARNIVAL is one flat beyond the key of the horn.

As a side note, the melody of CARNIVAL is neither Venetian or Neapolitan. It may be French in origin! I've been trying to nail this down for years.

There is a published arrangement for F tuba (Michael Lind's recording led me to it). Is that the edition of the solo part you're using? If so, it would be beyond quick to set it for Brass Band in that key :)
