Best darn pocket knife ever.

Post by oldbandnerd »

My sister gave me a Cutco pocket knife as a Christmas present 10 years ago. Not only is one of the best gifts I have gotten it is the best pocket knife I have ever owned. It is extremly sharp and holds its edge really well. It has a straight edge,a serated edge and a pair of scissors. I keep it on my key ring and it is the right size to fit in my pocket and not get arrested for carrying an illegal weapon .
When she bought me mine it was $40.00 .That's a lot for a little pocket knife but it has really come in handy many times and it's still sharp after so may years of use.

After dealing with disappointing lockups on bigger name knives, I have really become a Swiss Army knife fan. However, I don't really like the scissors or nail files. My favs so far are the small Tinker (medium and small blades, excellent phillips, bottle opener with big flathead, can opener with small flathead, awl that I don't really use), Bantam (blade and multipurpose dealie), and Solo (aluminum, 1 large blade, my favorite knife ever). I didn't care for the full sized Tinker. I have a Pioneer I want to like but the blade tension is so spongy. I don't really like how the tool on the Bantam sticks out a bit, but I'd still get a Bantam L or XL if one existed. I'd even send my Pioneer off to someone to get it cut down to just the blade and the big flathead/bottle opener with a stronger spring but the opener is angled the wrong way. 440C or the like would also be nice but all mine seem to cut well even when rather dull.

They really are excellent knives- solid build, useful, and very affordable. Everyone should have a few.

Ditto on the Tinker. I've carried mine every day for over ten years and still love it.

Ah! but I specifically mean the small Tinker. That was my first SAK and I don't remember why I ordered that specific one. After reading more I ordered another one which arrived as the 91mm Tinker, not the 84mm I actually I have. For me, I think the 91's are getting a bit big for a slip joint. My Solo has a strong, snappy enough "lockup" for this to not be a concern.
Oddly enough, I've had 2 small Tinkers. One has the half lock on the bottle opener and the pin hole underneath the phillips, my first one has neither. I'm not a fan of the half lock as I've never need nor wanted to use that tool in the half way position and it really snaps in and out. I actually cut myself on one once.

That small Tinker really is a gem. My first one got a lot of sand in it at work and hasn't bee the same even after a through cleaning and I gave the second to a friend; I really need to grab a few more.

I just had to chime in here. I carry an Opinel, for a bunch of reasons: It's not stainless steel, so while it may get dull quicker, it sharpens beautifully. The handle is wood, so it gets better with age. The locking mechanism is fool-proof. It is easy on the pocket - both literally (my Swiss Army knife destroyed more pockets than I care to admit) and in a financial sense - this is an everyday inexpensive knife. I use it in the kitchen and garden as well as on the boat.
The first one I had was described to me as a "French picnic knife".

I have never heard of Opinel knifes so I had to go look at them. Exactly which one do you have Sally Larsen ? They have a lot of different styles in their catalouge.

The one I like best is the carbon steel folding knife - Currently I have both a #9 and a #8. I prefer the #9, but girly pants have small pockets...

While I still have that warm-and-gooey spot in my heart for dedicated folding knives, I have recently been a multitool-only carrying man. My main blade used to be a Spyderco Centofante 3 of Delica 4, but that has since been replaced by my trusty Victorinox Explorer. It's main blade has been perfectly suitable and functional for everything I need a knife for, and the extra tools always come in handy when least expected. :)

I have an Opinel I found in the road years ago, handle a little cracked from having been run over. Maybe that's why the lock collar doesn't work right. Very likable knife, but too big to carry around all the time. When I forget to put my pocket knife in the checked luggage, on my return home I go to the flea market to get another pocket knife, from a guy who goes down to the airport and gets their confiscated pocket knives. Unfortunately, these knives are usually stainless blades.

I carry two "pocket" knives. One is a Benchmade Griptillian that was given to me as a wedding gift. I also carry a Swiss Army Knife, complete with tweezers and toothpick, on my keychain.

If I need a blade, I reach for the Benchmade. If I need a small screwdriver, file, tweezers, or to cut my fingernails or a hangnail, I reach for the Swiss Army Knife.

From time to time, if my activities require it, I can also carry an original Leatherman or a Buck 110. Now that my Leatherman has been returned from some warranty issues, it's almost brand new.

Man I hate Spydercos; I've got 4, none of them with a decent lockup, and their hardcore fans are creepily lame.

yeah nerd I got one for fathers day about 10 years ago and love it. Not a day goes by that I do not use it for something. I had to replace it however because I forgot to take it off my key chain when I was going on an airplane and they made me toss it. I was really upset about that.

So where can you buy it? I've heard enough people rave about Cutco products, I think I'd love that pocket knife. But, I can't find it listed on Cutco's website.

Plus, is there any place to buy one other than through a Cutco rep?
