He's playing a BBb tuba in an orchestra. Obviously no good. Why even bring it up?

(Actually, I'm listening to the whole series the second time now. It's really splendid.)

Thank you very much for the link, Bill!

This performance kept my interest, whereas another European orchestra heard in its own digital subscription series to me sounds dull especially when conducted by their chief conductor.

if any complaints at all, then that the tuba was too loud and drowned one of the first entries with the Wagner Tuben. But then the sound is very alive. Listening to this performance deserves a good sound system and/or good headphones.

Yep - Walter is unbelievable.
"The ****", as we say, meaning that he is in a class of his own.
I have never heard anyone who can play quite like he can.
Deeply inspiring.
Listening now and awestruck.
Check out 0:55 on the 6th video.
Wow.
No basses there - he is toning out under the whole band.
Great little chorale a minute later.
Wow.
Total resonance machine...
My hero.

Amazing sound! :tuba: 6th vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dq2RlIx ... re=related

Ya know, at first I thought he was playing a M-W 197 BBb......but upon closer inspection, the mouthpipe is curved a bit differently and the ferrules are different. I think this may be THE Bohland & Fuchs Kaiser BBb. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Add another to my favorite player's list. Walter was/is amazing. It's a shame he is doing little playing these days in favor of teaching/conducting.

The above sign met me, when I tried to access the video again a few minutes ago. Apparently a third party has complained it violated their copyright. Apparently NHK is the Japanese state owned broadcaster.

Ahh dang. If someone knows of a mirror let us know. This looks really neat. Maybe NHK's website has something...

Great!

Just listened to NYPO playing Strauss Alpine, 1st horn concerto, and Till Eulenspiegel. Will be taken down at noon NY time today. For those having the opportunity/time to listen before that:

Don't want to be a master of the obvious here, but just to make sure...

You can make an okay recording of audio from YouTube by patching your earphone jack into the microphone jack on your computer, then recording from the external microphone in Audacity, which is free, or Apple's Garage Band.

It's not CD quality, but it doesn't lose much if at all from YouTube. FWIW.

You may want to as I have, download off YouTube using RealPlayer before it gets taken down again (as it surely will)

You can directly copy a Youtube streamed item @ quality with the "download helper" (firefox browser) plugin - it will save the flash streams as FLV files, playable by multiple file readers...

This is beyond my abilities with a computer. I am on Mac Lion with the Mac version of RealPlayerSP.

If it is possible for me with this equipment/software to take videos down from YouTube, please give me a few hints about what to do.

klaus:
First install http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/
Then install http://www.downloadhelper.net/

In firefox, on a Youtube page, you can then click on the download helper icon and the flv file should apear, sometimes it is oddly named, and you may have trouble deciding what to DL, but from youtube sites, it is fairly obvious what you want.

To view the files, I use Mpeg Streamclip http://www.squared5.com/. And yes, I use a Mac

Here is what I use:

You can download to multiple formats (FLV, m4a, etc). You can search YouTube directly inside the app as well.

Thanks for the links to Ben and Josh!

I have downloaded the various stuff. Except the downloadhelper. That site is so horribly badly organized that I cannot find anything to download. The pages have pastel colours, which may be nice to look at, but which are very unfriendly towards efficient searches of the pages. Please give me a link for the exact page and please tell where to look at that page. Download buttons shall be very visible and shall not be buried somewhere in a text block. (I do not like designers that took their degree in a kindergarden).
