If the valves are original, then it may also be stamped on the top of the valve body.

Normally... the serial number is stamped into the side of the 2nd valve casing. I've seen some numbers that were very light and in some cases... they may have been buffed away completely during an overhaul. Many manufacturers also stamped the serial numbers into the top of the pistons.
