I got a call late yesterday afternoon from a fellow wanting to sell a St. Petersburg tuba. He said his son had quit playing and needed to sell it for Christmas money. The fellow showed up here at the shop around 9am this morning with the horn. Turns out that I sold this horn a little over a year ago to the local University. Within minutes the sheriff was here, cuffed the guy, and contacted the owner. The horn was just stolen yesterday morning. Pretty quick recovery!

Great catch!

I was in a friend's music store, oh, about 35 years ago, when a guy brought in a Fender Precision Bass to sell with the same or similar story. I was sitting in the corner with a guitar being a typical teenager. After checking out the bass, including its markings and numbers (I think he remembers every single instrument that has ever passed through his store of any importance!), the owner looked over and gave me "one of those looks," so I quickly looked down and focused on playing the guitar I was holding and not moving and not talking otherwise so as to not raise suspicion. After agreeing on "price" to purchase it, the store owner calmly said he had to contact his bank to get a cashier's check and he had to go in the back to use the telephone to arrange for it. After a few minutes, he came back out, stalled the guy until the police got there, who arrested the suspect and confiscated the bass for evidence and eventual return to the owner.

So having got to live vicariously one of these stories, I love to hear about them and their happy endings. Thanks, Dan!

Good for you, Dan! Still, I can't help thinking that I really hope the guy lied about having a son. Kids deserve better.

Yay team. I have a question about numbers, though. In ads for horns placed by owners, they offer partial serial numbers and pound signs, like the thief would if he could. What's with this practice?

Agreed.

But that concept (which is biblical) applies to all Ten of the Commandments, including the Fourth Commandment, which is kept by very few people in this age.
