Today I attended my first ever TubaChristmas at Newberry College, Newberry, SC. I'm on the uphill side of my 60's. Played Sousaphone in high school, every wind band I could in college and even two years in the local symphony when in college. Went to grad school and really didn't pick up a horn again until 8 weeks ago. That is over a 44 year break. To sit on that stage and hear and feel low brass music like never before while playing...wow! In that setting Komm, Susser Tod was one of the most moving pieces of music I have ever played. Thank you Harvey Phillips for creating this amazing experience and also to Tubenet for talking about it. I think I really notice it on a link to Sousa Central, thank you BR. Outstanding job by the way by Professor Long, the Newberry College Low Brass Professor who organized and directed this event and great job by the low brass players at Newberry and the nearby public schools.

That's it. I played in Naples, FL last week and smiled all the way to the irish pub across the courtyard were my wife saved a table for me and another tuba and spouse.
Next week, i am driving to Punta Gorda, FL for another tuba Christmas, YIPPEE...
make that lower...whooop whooop arooogahh.

If you play tuba because you love the low brass sound, why pass up a chance to play in a low brass 40 piece very large quartet...?

Tuba Christmas...an ever changing experience for all of us. I just counted 26 badges on my TC scarf. Some a few years ago playing with my son during his HS Euph years. New and different this year, finally talked my wife the trombone player into joining me. I finally set aside my 5J and played the Weril Euph. (This is an ex-Middle School horn via eBay I refer to as a Weril-Beater ) Anyway, Thanks to all who made it possible; see you next year!

Good job Sandlapper. I to played my first Tuba Christmas in Savannah, GA on the 10th. We had 12 strong , 6 & 6. Met some very nice folks and everyone was patient with me and helpful.

I too just started back playing this past February after a 38 year hiatus. Getting schooled by the 5'5" young lady sitting next to me playing 4/4 or 5/4 CC tuba was both humbling and inspiring. She's finshing her Masters and is soon to audition for a symphony somewhere. She will do well.

I can't wait until next year. I only wished I'd known about the Charleston, SC Tuba Christmas on Friday evening the 9th. They posted late and I'd have like to have done both.

These events sure up the learning curve for us "comeback kids."

We always have an impromptu Tuba Christmas here in Lincoln, NE (aka, it doesn't show up on the tuba christmas website) and my daughter (3 years old now) loves it! We have it in the rotunda of our capital building and so everytime we drive by she points and says "Daddy! That's where you play you tuba?" I love it!
