Tubenet online library

Post by cambrook »

I apologise in advance if this has been suggested before.

Another mailing list that I'm on (tube audio instead of tube a) has a section they call "The Bookcase" where interesting articles are posted so that they are available for downloading. A couple of recent threads where people have jumped on saying "I'd like a copy too" makes me wonder if a similar section could work here in Tubenet?

I know that there may be copyright issues, perhaps items could be sent to Sean and he could post them if he's happy about them. Although I'd love to see it, obviously it wouldn't be OK for the withdrawn Shostakovich/Torchinksy books to be put there :)

A modification of the bookcase idea would have posts such as:

I have a copy of Jabba the Hut. Contact me if you would like a copy.

With this method the holder of the item maintains control over who gets copies of things while the Tubenet readers get knowledge of resources they may be able to use.

What do you think?

Are you just thinking of a clever way to steal music?

Absolutely not. I imagine this section could contain interesting articles and reviews etc, and also things like the incredible trumpet part written for Malcolm McNab that you posted about a while back. There must be a decent amount of interesting stuff that is either public domain or could be posted there with the authors permission.

Perhaps Jabba the Hut was a poor example, but I don't see how posting it in this section is much different to posting a link to it.

The thread on "Blackbird" made me think of the idea. I don't know who did the arrangement in question, and what their attitude would be to having it passed around. If it's available commercially then those who want a copy can buy one, but if lots of people are asking for a copy (and the copyright holder agrees) then why not put in a Library section?

Alternatively, some postings in this section could list pieces, the publisher (if appropriate) and if not published, where they can be obtained.

Sounds like a lot of work. But it sounds interesting.
