Brass 5tet + Organ Masterworks?

Post by Z-Tuba Dude »

Hey folks,

One of the groups that I work with has an excellent organist available, but we are running out of pieces to play!

Can anyone recommend any really good pieces for brass quintet & organ?

What is good music? I am never in doubt, when listening myself, but there are elements of individual taste involved.

That said, I don’t remember any works written specifically for your desired formation. You likely have looked through Bruckner’s works. Likely also through the listings in the appendixes of this book

Gregory, Robin (1973). The Trombone: The Instrument and its Music. London: Faber & Faber. ISBN 0-571-08816-3.

If you are out for works with good effects in churches, you may go for the Venetian antiphonal works for two or three groups of instruments, where careful arranging between various sections of the organ may let that instrument for more than one group.

There also is a repertory for two vocal choirs with or without continuo, where the BQ may one of the choirs. The composer immediately coming to my mind is Heinrich Schütz.

But then you likely are past this stage already.

Z, before I launch into shameless self-promotion, I have to say that my quintet was in the same boat a few years back. We felt like we had played the same stuff and wanted something new. We wanted new material not just for church services, but also brass/organ arrangements that could be performed in a concert setting.

Here is a partial list of some music I have arranged and published:
Brahms, Variations on a Theme by Haydn (all 8 variations and finale)
Brahms - Choral and Finale (shorter version of the Haydn variations)
Mahler - Finale to Sym #2
Mahler - Finale to Sym #3
Mahler - Urlicht (Horn solo or Alto solo)(coming soon! next two weeks)
Saint-Saens - Maestoso from Sym #3 ("Organ" Symphony)
Parry - I Was Glad
Mascagni - Easter Hymn (not just for Easter)
Mascagni - Intermezzo
Chesnokov - Salvation is Created
Berlioz - Hosanna (from Requiem)
Franck - Grand Choeur in C (from L'Organiste)
Handel - March Grand Choeur (from Joshua, made famous by Diane Bish)
Whitney - Processional Grand March (Whitney was a founding member of the AGO)
Widor - Toccata

Almost all of these arrangements are available thru Robert King or the Organ Historical Society (on-line catalog, under sheet music for organ and brass ensembles). Or you can order directly on my website http://www.dorm40music.com" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank, where you can also see a sample page and listen to an audio of the arrangement (the Brahms, for example, was recorded by the Triton Brass at King's Chapel in Boston). If you purchase on my website, we are having a sale all day 12/23. 20% off everything, just enter the discount word SANTA on the Checkout page.

I hope you find something you like. Enjoy!

I believe the Denver Brass also publishes some brass quintet with organ works.

We recently programmed two that I really like:
John Kuzma's arrangement of the Gigout Grand Choer Dialogue - Boulder Brass
Craig Phillips Suite for Organ and Brass - Selah

I am fortunate to have a great job that feeds my family well, but music feeds my soul.

Definitely check out Craig Garner's stuff. Triton's played his Haydn Variations a few times...awesome! Also really like his Saint Saens Organ Symphony. Every organist knows the Widor Toccata...very easy to put together quickly. Gabrieli's are always fun w organ. Also check out some Daniel Pinkham stuff.
