Do you own a 3/4 Rudy CC AND a tape measure?

Post by The Bone Ranger »

You do?!

Excellent!

Would you be kind enough to measure the following tuning slide parts for me?

Main tuning slide: both legs of the tuning slide, and both receivers (or both the male and female parts, if you prefer).

Fourth valve slide: one of the legs and one of the receivers. Either side will do, as they're the same length on this slide.

A previous owner of my Rudy 3/4 CC has had both of these slides shortened, and before I have them put back to standard length, I'd like to know how much I'm missing. If it's not much, it may not be worth my time, but I suspect it's a good 3 to 5 centimeters.

Thanks for your help.

Andrew

PS A ruler would also work in lieu of a tape measure.

I wonder if my Rudy has also been cut. Difficult to know and I'm content with the current length.

Here are my measurements:
Inner tubes:
Small side: 68mm
Large side: 61mm
Outer tubes:
Small side: 77mm
Large side: 69mm

Fun fact that might be helpful:
The small side of the slide appears to be interchangeable with the 19mm tubing used on B&S PT rotary first valves. The large side seems to be interchangeable with the 21mm tubing used on B&S rotary 3rd, and 4th valves and small side of the tuning slides. The slide tubing for the valve section is 18.5mm and appears to be interchangeable with what's used on the fifth through third valve of a MW45S F tuba.

Substantially different from my main slide:

Inner tubes:
Small side: 75mm
Large side: 45mm

Outer tubes:
Small side: 80mm
Large side: 49mm

It seems as though yours may have been cut, and also that the main tuning slide must be configured differently. The way mine is set up, the large side of the tuning slide will always be approximately 25mm shorter than the small side.

I will raise the deal; a 50' tape measure, a level, AND a 25' tape for the Rudy. Carrying case for all included.

Thanks for the pictures.

I notice your tuning slide receivers still have the rings on them, so either it's not been shortened, or the person who did the job unsoldered the rings and put them back on afterwards. My kind of repair guy!

Here's mine:

You can see that the large side of the tuning slide is configured to be substantially shorter than the small side, so it seems like our horns are from different eras. I can't recall exactly what era the previous owner of my horn thought it came from, but it was definitely post-computer tweaks at the Rudolf Meinl factory.

Yeah... I don't know the vintage of mine either. The lacquer is long gone.. it has a random person's social security number on it that I use as a serial number.. the linkage has been converted at some point with hobby shop parts.. AND most interestingly.. mine is one of the coveted 3/4 Rudys with a BELL WREATH. :)

I have grand visions of tweaking the horn out and getting her spiffed up over time but even it's current condition it's an excellent horn.
