Question for CC tuba players:

What BBb tuba (if any), regardless of era, expense, etc. would make you switch your main axe from CC to BBb.

If I had to pick one...it would be a toss up between a Meinl Weston 195 "Fafner" Bb, or a Rudolf Meinl 6/4 Bb.

Can't speak of the Rudy, but the Fafner is a GREAT horn. Has anyone played the Miraphone Siegfried (sp?)?

Rudy Meinl "Bayreuth" 5/4 . . . without hesitation, is the best BBb out there for me.

I've been chastised when I considered divesting myself of my 4/4 Nirschl CC.

But if I were to add a BBb to the arsenal, the Miraphone Siegfried (have they begun production yet?), a 345, or a 4-valve York monster tuba might be candidates.

The 6/4 Rudy? I'd have to be sure that I could play full phrases on that monster.

I'm very curious about the tall Kaiser BBb's from Nirschl, Melton/M-W (197 or 198), and similar horns. They're not often seen in the States, so I've never had the opportunity to play one. It would be very revealing to play one of those tall Kaisers back to back with a York-style 6/4 horn, and to listen to someone else do the same.

After playing a 56J for a year and a half, just about anything

But, as usual, 1291 Bb and possibly 191 Bb (like the sound more, does not play as easily for me). 2341's are also mighty fine horns, imo much better than the Conn C's. I'd like to play an 17/18" bell 2341. That might be just the 4/4 contrabass for me.

I'm not such a fan of either of the Fafners. The Siegfried is ok but needs some work on physical design and doesn't impress me as much as the 5/4 Miraphone Bb's. Steve Ferguson and Marcus Theinart did laugh when they saw me play it at Midwest ("It looks like a regular tuba on him!"

).

Apart from that, CC just makes more sense to me and even if I played an awesome BBb tuba, I'd probably end up looking for a CC tuba with those qualities instead of buying the BBb. The key of C just feels like the right starting place to me. No sharps, no flats. Easy as it gets, easy to keep it straight. It's like counting up from zero instead of starting at -1.
