I studied euphonium with the great man at MSU from 1975-1979. His teaching is the basis for my playing and style to this day.

I bought his Golden Crest LP when I was in high school, and still have it.

The first time I played it and heard that vibrato, I honestly thought something was wrong with my turntable.

A friend of mine was a protege of his at Michigan. Used to mow his lawn to earn beer money. I'll see if he can chime in here, I'll email a link to this thread.

Oh yeah. My college roomie, a French horn player, drove a faded blue Ford Falcon.

He called his car "Leonard".

Dr. Falcone conducted the All State B and here in Colorado in 1965 (yeah I'm and older player). I asked him to please play for the group at break time. He borrowed my horn, a 4 valve compensating Besson, sat on the podium facing the band, an d played "Beautiful Colorado" (appropriate, don't you think) He totally mesmerized the whole room. It was a wonderful experience.

I was not enrolled in its School of Music but enthusiastically played tuba in Michigan State University's band beginning in 1961 when Dr. Falcone was MSU's Director of Bands (I believe was his proper title then). He scared the valve-oil outa' me, I remember. But as I reflect upon it, I'm humbled the great man let me play in his band and proud that he plainly thought I was worth the trouble of the lessons for which he insisted I sit for him now and then. I hear their echos 50 years later -- and glad I do!

That vibrato is very old style in 2012 but in 1960 not so much. He didn't teach that wide a vibrato by the way. Also, you made the cardinal sin in your post. Unless your friend is about 100 he was a protege at Michigan State not Michigan.
