I haven't seen the ASO in a long time, but in his early days I used to listen to him a lot. I was always amazed by the beauty of his sound and the near-perfection of his intonation.

I hear the ASO a half dozen times a year and nothing else can match the enveloping sound of live music. Michael always gets it done. Was that his top action Eb he was practicing Bydlo on? That's the horn he used in concert this year. Had not seen it before, but that was the first time I heard them do Pictures. Maybe that's his Bydlo horn.

It's a shilke F tuba. He said it has a great tone but a bad scale, but works for Bydlo.

He also used the Schilke for Petrushka. Interesting configuration with five piston valves. These were the forerunners of the Yamaha 621 series.

Hey, that's our conductor leading the Meistersinger! I'd recognize that bald spot anywhere! (I didn't say that). It's Roberto Minczuk, conductor of the Calgary Philharmonic. He was in the news quite a bit a year ago concerning the handling of the orchestra he also conducts in Brazil.

I also have memories of hearing the ASO a couple of times when I was a student in the early 1970s. Mike sounded great at that time in the reconstructed Mahler 10, but I never met him. Check out their recordings of the Berlioz Requiem, Copland 3rd Symphony and Vaughan Williams Sea Symphony for some good tuba sounds.

More on Moore

Two points. Michael Moore and Dennis Miller have had similar career profiles in that they were talented enough to win good jobs at extremely early ages and then to more than hold their own as their orchestras (Atlanta and Vancouver) improved around them. Dennis, of course, wound up going to Montreal, where he has continued to shine, both as a performer and as a teacher at McGill.

As to the Schilke F tuba, I remember seeing it around Schilke's in the old location in the Loop of Chicago when I was studying in town. They seem to have begun with the frame of an E-flat tuba and completely reconfigured it into a five-piston F tuba. Although I was excited to play an F tuba that had a resonant low end, the consensus at the shop seemed to be that it was a less-than successful experiment. Ron Collier described the scale as "Chinese;" a comment that brings a smile today. Anyway, it sat there for some time and became something of an item of furniture. As I recall,the last time I saw it, it was decorated for Christmas. I'm glad that it found a good home. It's impressive to hear Michael play Bydlo on it. Personally, I have retired from playing that piece in favor of the eager euphonium players who surround me.

+1 When I took some lessons from him, I believe he said it had a great high range, but wasn't good for much else but Bydlo, Petrushka, etc.
