What commercial recordings have the tuba play Bydlo?

Post by Tubadork »

Hey,
a friend and I were talking about this and we could only come up with NYP with Sinopoli.

Any others?

Plenty of tuba players talk about manning up and playing it, but it seems like there are not too many recordings of pros playing it.

Bill
FYI, I'm in the play it on Euph myself or pass it along camp, I just don't see a good reason to do it.

Jacobs with Chicago under Reiner?

Torchinsky with Philadelphia under Ormandy?

Hey,
I've heard the tale of the Jacobs Reiner, but the one that I know, it's not Jacobs.

What year is the Ormandy, or do you have an Amazon link?

Thanks,
Bill

The Ormandy is old vinyl, and I don't think the link to this will be up for too long for obvious reasons: http://www.amazon.com/Mussorgsky-Pictur ... 52&sr=8-40

It's included in this CD release: http://www.amazon.com/Original-Jacket-C ... B0018TNJL4

I thought Dee Stewart played all of the Bydlo solos for Philadelphia. I can't remember hearing about a Torchinsky performance.

I believe there are at least two recorded performances by Jacobs of Bydlo, the 1957 recording with Reiner and the recording with Ozawa conducting. That's just from memory, someone else (Brian?) will have to verify that.

Edit: I thought someone told me this performance was also recorded for sale but I'm not certain.

Though not a tuba performance, this is my favourite recording of this solo:

It's played by Gordon Wolfe, Principal Trombone of the Toronto Symphony.

On the Kubelik recording, Jacobs played it on the BB flat side of a BB flat/ F tuba
On the Ozawa recording he played it on a Yamaha Euphonium
Bob Lambert played it on the Reiner recording

LA had one in the 70's that sounded like Mr. Bobo playing an F, in spectacular fashion.

Mr. Bobo did play the solo but he played his Alexander tenor tuba.

What is the sense of a percentage of tuba use in professional orchestra performances, live or recorded. I would think from the comments that it must be on the low side with some sort of tenor instument getting the higher useage. Would anyone hazard a guess, maybe 20% of the time on tuba of any key? What do you think?

100% of the times I've heard it performed by a live, professional orchestra, it was performed on F tuba.

Perfection was, um, not always attained.

Not a whole lotta difference between euphonium and French tuba, barring one whole step and several valves.

I believe that the 1991 NY Phil recording conducted by Sinopoli (Deutsche Grammophon) has Warren Deck playing Bydlo on an F.

I might be wrong though...

I live in Texas. I've heard the Pictures played twice. San Antonio Symphony with Lee Hipp. According to some of his students he was playing on a tenor tuba, but in my youth it looked like an F tuba. Austin Symphony did it a year or two ago. Steve Bryant played it on a Yamaha Euphonium. Both good performances, both not on F tuba (or I guess at least one case that I can ACTUALLY confirm.) I tend to agree with you Rick that it works better on smaller members of the tuba family.
