Harvey Phillips/Scherzo

Post by ppalan »

Hi All,
...just listened to a recording of a group called the Daniel Boone Forest Symphony Band. It was purchased from one of our sponsors, Tubagear.com. Anyway there's a recording of Mr. Phillips playing a tune called Scherzo. Does anyone know anything about this piece, like who wrote it, is it still available, and if so - where?

Thanks in advance for any info. 8)

If it's the one that pops up here:

That's Alfred Bartles' "Scherzo" that he wrote for Harvey Phillips around 1970. Last heard, it was out of print...which is really a shame. It's a lot of fun to play.

I did this with the Bellingham, Washington, Civic Band, one of the last municipally funded Professional bands in the US, in about 1979-80. We had to rent the parts for it. I asked Harvey what the point of the piece was and he said it was written for the audience to have fun listening too. It has a lovely effect, with the band; it is a good arrangement. You might write to the Harvey Phillips Foundation and ask about its availability for rental. Tom or Carol may know. The Foundation is mostly about TubaChristmas but that website has an address for the Bloomington HQ and it is not so large a request for something else is liable to get lost.
Always make a good sound; audiences will forget if you miss a note but making a good sound will get you the next job.

I recall seeing the band accompaniment for this when I was at IU @2002. Don't know if they would loan this out though as I remember it being manuscript.

Thread hijack alert!
Bill, to what degree is the Bellingham Civic Band "professional"? Do/did they pay a legit rate for rehearsal time/performances, meaning something resembling union scale more than tips only?
I ask because my hometown band is tax-funded ($.001/$100 evaluation, I think, maybe per $1000) and they do pay everyone a small stipend, maybe $20 a week. That is a rarity, I know, but there must be others. What can you tell me about Bellingham? Thanks!
