York Eminence Lead Pipe Photos?

Post by XtremeEuph »

Hey there,

Does anyone have a photo, or link to a photo of the lead pipe on the York Eminence Euphonium? I would like to see this "free floating" 'senza' solder design. Primarily, I want to show it to my Pedagogy professor as well. I can't seem to find any good views on google that show this specification well.

Thanks,

Kevin

Been a couple of years since I tried the York, but IIRC, it's the same as the floating leadpipe on the made-in-England Besson Sovereign GS and the current crop of Buffett-Crampon Sovereigns.

Thanks Charlie (I think ;) ). Those pictures are helpful. They lead me to understand that now I DON'T understand the concept. What is different in this lead pipe design? I thought it wasn't braced to the bell, or something to that effect. I also read your post on Tromboneforum about this, you seem to like it huh .

Kev

***EDIT**** . Is it the fact that it is not soldered on?

Hi Kev,

This fitting is soldered at the valve block & receiver, not touching the bell.

The York instrument it came from had a small stay midway onto the bell. We left this off (as a later option) as the Willson sleeve fitting at the valve block is very solid, unlike the York ones.

It's totally different from the original Willson unit (based on the B&H Imperial from the 70's) in design, taper & bore and was purely an experiment, which has now lead to the new UK models (just the 2950/60 at present) having similar but slightly tweeked units fitted as standard, from the Willson factory in Switzerland.

It has transformed the instrument (which was very good initially) with a much responsive feel across the range and more open sound, even with the smaller 11" bell.
Tuning issues are minor/no worse than with the previous leadpipe.

I'm very happy!

I've had many enquiries from friends for similar fittings to other instruments, the units from the French factory (via Windcraft in the UK) take about 6-8 weeks and come separatly (leadpipe & receiver) in silver plate or brass, not lacquered.

That was the initial idea behind the design, although differences in bell thickness these days playes a large part too. The first Sovereigns that had that idea had slightly thinner bells than the original 967 so responded easier anyway.

There were also a couple of prototype Sovs. with Imperial leadpipes too.

My older Willson is noticably thicker/heavier metal than my 2004 instrument.

Great guys! Thanks.

I would LOVE to get my hands on a 2900 just to try some day. There are so few kicking around up here in Canada.
