Duet with Sergio Carolino has 6 days left on kickstarter!!

Post by LARSONTUBA »

Hi TubeNet!

We are at 73% in our kickstarter appeal. My friends, composers Nick Hwang and Corey Knoll, and I were accepted to present at ITEC in Austria this summer. Our presentation is a bit different than most. We are presenting a digital instrument that Nick and Corey have devised, called GUA. In order to make that happen, we need to bring our own electronic equipment to Austria. This includes building our own speaker arrays. This is expensive! So far we have raised $2,200, of $3,000. That money will all go towards building the hemispherical speakers we need to make our presentation successful. If there is any left over, we would apply it to rehearsal space rental fees in Portugal.

Sergio and I will be the tuba performers, while Nick and Corey operate the GUA stations.

We are planning to arrive in Portugal the week before ITEC and rehearse with Sergio. While we are there, we will be presenting at the Porto Superior Conservatory, where Sergio teaches. We will also be performing in a few local venues near where Sergio lives.

Please help us to make this a reality! We have a lot of expensive, travel friendly equipment to build. Thanks for reading, and if you can't or don't want to donate, please at least pass the word on to your friends and colleagues.

We don't have a setup. The hemispherical speaker setup we currently use is not portable. The speakers are remarkably heavy, and are approximately 18" in diameter. We are planning to make small, portable versions of our hemispherical speakers that can be condensed to about the size of a soccer ball. This will fit in a suitcase or carry on bag with ease. We have to purchase the raw materials for them, as well as take the time to build them ourselves. They are not commercially available, in a portable style.
KiltieTuba wrote:How is this any different from the last Kickstarter thread that wanted other people to fund the project, without any real return on the backing?

Of every other type of project, people normally invest their money to see either it returned or a share in the profit. I guess I don't understand why you can't finish your project now - why can't each of you come up with $1,000? You can't figure out how to calculate this in your budget or get a loan or something?
If you are referring to our previous attempt, it is different only in the amount we are trying to raise. Our previous attempt was trying to get $12,000. With that money, we were planning to build our speaker arrays, as well as book and present numerous performances across Europe. We had included in our wishlist performances at STEIM in Amsterdam, IRCAM in Paris, as well as performances at smaller venues in Cologne, Brussels, Antwerp, Madrid, and Barcelona. All of those would have been organized using funds from our raised money. That didn't happen. We revamped our scope. Now, we are only going to Portugal to accomplish our rehearsing with Sergio, perform a few small concerts and masterclasses, and travel to Austria.

With kickstarter, if you look at other projects, the donors rarely get their money back, or some share of profit. Typically, donors get an original copy a CD before it is officially released. Or a signed poster from the premiere. Or a DVD of exclusive behind the scenes footage. Or a hand written thank you note.

Of course we could get a loan or something. But if we can create some kind of a sense of community and have other people take part and pride in what we are doing, why not go that route instead? That's what kickstarter is all about.

If you don't like it, don't donate! It's as simple as that. Experimental music isn't for everyone. We know that. Thanks for reading.

Great, more academia for academia's sake. Someone refresh my memory, how did Harvey Philips get all of those composers to write all of those pieces for tuba?

Newsflash: it's a tuba. No one is listening anyway. Might as well play the music you want to play; the pay is exactly the same.

How did Harvey get all those new works written?????

Besides the fact that he was very well known as a performing artist and had a LOT of "connections", he often personally commissioned new works and PAID the composers for doing so. I think it would be fair to say he paid out more than he ever made by performing new works. Yes, composers like to make a bit of bread so they too can eat.

As has been said, if you don't like it, don't donate. If nobody donates to anybody there will probably be fewer new works getting written.

Thanks to everyone who has donated. Since I originally posted, we have added about 9 more backers. We are up to 42 people who want to be a part of this. We are currently at 89%, with 5 days to go.

As I said before, if you don't like it, don't donate. Thanks for reading!

If you get a chance to go to Austria, and while there you get a chance to go to Vienna (not too far from Linz); do it! Lived there for a while, and in my opinion it is the best city on earth.

Commissioning a composer is not a donation. It is an exchange of money for goods and services. Harvey paid for the goods and services provided by composers. That's the point juba was making.

No arguement on your point LJV. I would add, though, that Harvey often 'donated' with no expectation of anything in return and at times composers, Alec Wilder comes to mind, 'donated' some of their works with no expectation of any remuneration. Just a bit of giving purely for the sake of giving.

It is in keeping with Harveys dictum that "What I do for you is nothing; what you do for me is everything". Just a shame there aren't more like him..........

110% funded looks like it will be our final number.

Thanks to those of you who helped out. See you in Linz!

We may post some clips of the presentation on YouTube. The performance may or may not go up there. Because the composition isn't mine to upload, I'll leave that to the discretion of my colleagues, Nick Hwang and Corey Knoll. They are the ones composing the duet for Sergio and I.

It ought to be quite fun, though!!! Thanks for your interest!

If you follow my website, I will surely post information there upon my return.
