Yamaha 822 F Tuba Fingerings

Post by michaelkeys »

Maybe, this has been asked before.

I got a yamaha 822 F tuba. Checking with the tuner some notes were not in tune.
Which fingerings do you use with this instrument, or which corrections (slide pulling) do you make? Thanks for your help.

I don't pull any slides or use any alternate fingerings. I do lip down slightly most 1-2 combinations, and lip up slightly top-line A. Generally I find the tuning of mine to be excellent.

A mouthpiece will throw the tuning off. Make a chart showing results for a few mouthpieces.

I definitely agree with Dean that different mouthpieces will change some intonation. I use a Bobo Solo for any kind of solo playing along with Bydlo, and a Bobo Symphonic for anything else--orchestra, brass band Eb parts, and quintet. For me, the horn slots a little better with the Symphonic and the only adjustments I have to make are with slides: pulling 1st for D in the staff and pulling 4th for low Bb. With the Solo, I usually have to use 3 in place of 1+2 for Ds and As in the staff, 1+2 instead of 0 and 2+3 instead of 2 for A and Ab on top of the staff, and occasionally 4 instead of 1 for G at the top of the staff, depending on the situation (I usually only do this if I am playing with piano). Generally I have found the only notes that I have to watch are the 1+2 combos in the staff. I hope this helps, and feel free to PM me if you have any other questions.

:tuba: My current Tuba, King 1240 modified, needs to pull the 4th slide for play in tune. The others slides, I don´t pull, but I use 1-2 combo to play the natural notes, E and A( D and G effect sounds), and I reserve the 3th, in the combo 2-3, for the Eb and Ab ( Db Gb effect sounds) because this key is a little low when I use alone.
Normally, I prefer a accurate adjustment in the low register, and lip corrections in the medium register, when necessary.
Modified King 1240: 4 pistons and fixed bell
